Just Home from the game.. My Thoughts (Not Bleak)

Most of our miss tackles seem to be coming from tentative reactions. It seems our players are thinking like he'll out there. I have never seen us play where everyone was where they should be.....at the right time. The safetys in particular were tentative as **** instead of going 100 miles an hr and blowing **** up. Carter did a decent job

They do the same thing though when they have a clear heads up tackle opportunity on a guy where they are running in on the guy and all they have to do is wrap up, but they don't do it.

Defensively we ran a lot of man cover 1 which was beautiful to see. TO be honest Coach D called a great game some of our players just didnt make some plays. Arkansas ST only had 329 yards of offense. We didnt get a pass rush because we were trying to contain their running QB we dared him to throw which was a sound gameplan. This is evident due to the fact that n the fourth qtr Kamalu and others went off.

We need to run the same defense against the nebraska and trust our corners and safetys to make tackles. We did improve we looked better than we did against FAMU.

Yeah, but just eleven hours ago 3/4 of this board, if they were posting, would have been scared to death we'd lose. I never saw such a build up for such a mediocre opponent, but which might not have been as mediocre as Ark State is supposed to be.

We gave up 329 and 20 pts to Arkansas State. I appreciate that some of you bleak outlook guys are desperate to spin a decent win into hope but, the fact remains our D is garbage. Ten years ago we would expect a team like Arky to put up 200 yards and 3 points, anything better than that would be considered a poor performance.

Bama #3 in the polls gives up 12 points & 270 yds to who? Southern Mississippi? I'm not saying that giving up 20 points & 330 yds to Arkansas State is what we want from our D, but some people were concerned it could be a lot closer game then it was. It's got to start somewhere and the Defense looks like they're actually starting to get it.

Okay, Loserville lost to UVa after smaking us again. How's that. But for all the trash we say about Al and Mark's D, and it is well deserved, boys play well until late against Loserville and last year in the 1st half against both loserville and criminoles. The aggression is still missing and reaction to the other teams half time adjustments is just horrible. Still hate the basic concepts of Al's D, but it is looking a little better--hardly the monster we could have. It is worth noting that everyone on this board has been crying about DTs, more specifically NTs, and it seems we finally have some. That is probably the biggest difference.

BlackVern I was saying the same thing in another thread about the Defensive play calling. You got posters on here saying our D still sucks but at some point the players need to step up. I thought Dno called a pretty good game. Now is he Kirby Smart? No. But ****, baby steps. The tackling by our safeties has to get better and Tracy Howards girlfriend must have broke up with him or something. What the heck is wrong with that kid? Hes gonna look up and Crawford is going to take his minutes if he keeps it up.

Feel a little better about chances against NEB this weekend. My prediction went from us getting blown out to us maybe making this a close game. And in close games anything can happen especially when you have the better athletes.

I know this will get slammed, but Coach D is the same coach he was last year. We have better production at DT and MLB this year, Chick is healthy and McCord is a year older. Armbruster is making plays and the Bush is healthy, Crawford is playing well and Carter has learned he defense. In short, we sucked last year because of the execution on the field, not the play calling. This year the execution is so much better, so far.
 
I'm beginning to wonder if Tracy Howard needs glasses. Sometimes it seems like he can't see what's coming & then looks like he's not being aggressive enough.

Agree overall with OP.

OLine has to step the **** up. Even Flowers was looking like **** out there.

Agree here. I thought No D called a decent game overall. Arky St. is a very tricky team with a gimmicky offense that is very off tempo and can actually score points and burn you.

The main concern going into this game was going to be how our unimaginative defense adjusted to their style of play. I thought NoD had a very solid gameplan and contained their QB very well. What we gave up was more on the players. Definitely saw some missed tackles and some poor coverage on a few plays. Only so much you can lay on the coaches. Guys like Tracy, Artie, Carter HAVE to know better at this point.

That trick play where Artie was standing in the endzone chopping his feet waiting to make a tackle was simply mindblowing. How does he not know where he is and that he has to keep the guy out of the Endzone?

Overall most of my concerns yesterday on defense were guys just making mistakes and no executing. The staff didnt call a bad game, on DEFENSE. Coley is a whole other issue.
