Jonathan Garvin

Take a look at the kid's statistics and play from last season and feel free to compare them to any DE in the country.
Then, watch every single defensive play and let us know what he's being asked to do this year.
Please let us know how many opportunities from an edge rush he's given where the QB actually drops into a pocket.

Honest question since I know you break down a lot of our film - why aren't we asking him to edge rush as much? Baker produced the all time FBS leader in sacks while DC at La Tech. It is baffling as to why he would be completely changing his schemes especially given the athletes we have here.

I don't mind posters overrating and overestimating our players,,,,,,,just don't rip them because YOUR expectations were unrealistic

Just understand that the players are mostly doing what the coaches have asked them to do.....not what YOU want them to do

I wish this thread could be read aloud to a group of ACC defensive coordinators in front of the doofuses who posted their Garvin’s not very good stupidity.

You ******* idiots are an embarrassment to our program and fan base.

Why are they asking him to play this way is the better question.

For the past 3 years, we’ve gotten pressure up the middle from agile, disruptive DTs. We’ve had havoc creating edge guys like Trent Harris, Garvin himself, and sophomore year JJ. We have none of that now and the result is a lack of a consistent pass rush.

I get that our LBs don’t move sideline to sideline that well, but what basically amounts to a position change for Garvin isn’t the answer. I don’t get this defense at all.
My hope against hope is this was opponent-based. Can't imagine the Head Coach of the team fails to see what we're talking about.

Coaching.

They way they are having play is not letting him utilize his talents.

You need to let line up outside shoulder of the tackle and head up field full force on the snap.

Our coaches are asking him to set edge or spy only

Any Dline coach asking rush ends to routinely spy QBs should be fired. Seriously. We consistently blitz LBs and DBs even when we don’t have to but ask the guys best at rushing the passer to spy? Totally defeats the purpose. Rush ends suck at coverage, that’s why they are ends. You want to return to glory days, run the defense you did last year. Let the ends and 3-tech eat and LBs to clean up the carnage.

We need to get back to running a 4-3 one gap disruptive defense that reigns havoc on the online and scares the snot out of the QB. UNC should not be putting up points against us with a true frogs QB and weak roster.

Lu they dont even know what they are watching.

I literally watch the dude on a 3rd and long yesterday....come off the ball slow to run a twist, while running it he is spying qb...and chased the qb out of bounds to an errant throw. At no point he even went up the field on the play. They have done that with him ALOT this year in the last 3 games.

I think Baker thinks he is at LA TECH...and is using him like they did that #45 They had last year, but isnt really letting him pin back and rush the passer.

Oh well if he doesnt put up huge numbers that great ...maybe he stays for his sr year

Bingo. Matter of fact, if I’m not mistaken, on one play I could’ve sworn I saw 97 go out on a WR against UNC. I haven’t rewatched the game, but I’m fairly certain I saw him sprint out to cover a WR. I hope my eyes were deceiving me, b/c if so, imma need Manny to take Blake by the neck and have him watch HIS defense, again, since he said it’s a “similar concept.” Maybe Blake’s time at LA Tech has confused him with what Manny once ran before.

Like I said above, my hope is it's been opponent-based. All I know is when Diaz overused the zone blitzes in 2017, he came back in 2018 with less of it. Guy is Baker's boss, so I'm gonna wait and see.

Listening to Blake Baker's presser, he said Garvin has been the best DE this season.

I would rather a high performing defense than a high performing individual player. I did notice a lack of pass rush hurt us late against UNC but our defense has been better than good so far this year.

This was on a 3rd and short too if I'm not mistaken. Baker can't have those types of lapses in his play-calling. He uses Garvin like he's Dion Jordan. I don't exactly know alignments and what not, but I'm sure Blake can bring another DB or LB in so Garvin can do what he does best.

two observations.

first, maybe he doesnt trust his LBs to spy the QB. that would be an indictment on both 55 and 56.

second, susan will ask our coaches this question shortly, count on it.

Agreed!

Every player on the DL lacks moves and hand placement/ technique looks horrible. As bad as kool was.. he had our guys play with very good technique

You must do some in-depth film study

YES!!

He obviously has Good Eyes for what's really going on!!?o_O

With extensive, in depth film study... some here at CIS routinely see these intricacies....that remain unseen by our untrained eyes

That would be an indictment on Manny himself because he has failed to develop them and help them progress from the day they stepped on campus until now

i think it is that they are too slow and it is not a developmental issue. genetics. they are not going t get much faster. nothing to do with manny, imo

Yeap! Don’t forget the healing coaching pile of **** known as Banda is the Co-DC!
Not allowing the DE’s to work but calling all that stupid stunting BS.

Gotta let the DE’s work so they can use their moves & counter moves...
My fear is that this play style of consistently spying is not going to be very appealing to future DE recruits and they are going to go elsewhere...
