It’s fawking stupid! We should be out here headhunting and making mofos run for their lives but we out here sitting in spy with our D-Ends.. how could Diaz allow this ***ary!!! It’s like NoD all over again! Our game plan VS NO QB should be to rush 3 and and spy our DE! EVER!!

Petty concerning so far for the first 3 games.

How is this guy not all over quarterbacks and in the backfield constantly?

We better not waste a 1st round talent with stupid coaching again

Using him to spy and contain tells me that the LBs are too slow and the staff is scheming with the DEs to help them out

Again, very few people on this board want to hear the truth. It’s not bashing. Simply asking what the **** happened? He’s disappeared vs his first two years. He should have eaten that line alive today

It truly is amazing how many supposed huge football fans don't really play attention to what they're watching. Bethune only attempted 23 passes all day, and JG was only on the field for like 15 or 16 of them. And the majority of those were very quick throws, because.. Wait for it, Bethune didn't want Garvin, et al. consuming their QB alive. All that said, if you were paying attention, which you weren't, you'd see he was in the backfield on almost all those pass attempts.

I know you guys think it's a video game, and JG should have like 8 sacks vs Bethune because that's what you'd do with him on NCAA14, but..

There were at most a handful of passes where a sack could've happened. The QB either eluded the rush or threw it away.

Take a look at the kid's statistics and play from last season and feel free to compare them to any DE in the country.
Then, watch every single defensive play and let us know what he's being asked to do this year.
Please let us know how many opportunities from an edge rush he's given where the QB actually drops into a pocket.

Lu they dont even know what they are watching.

I literally watch the dude on a 3rd and long yesterday....come off the ball slow to run a twist, while running it he is spying qb...and chased the qb out of bounds to an errant throw. At no point he even went up the field on the play. They have done that with him ALOT this year in the last 3 games.

I think Baker thinks he is at LA TECH...and is using him like they did that #45 They had last year, but isnt really letting him pin back and rush the passer.

Oh well if he doesnt put up huge numbers that great ...maybe he stays for his sr year

I think we managed 2 and half sacks. Patchan had one and I think Hall had the other. All the other DEs struck out because the QB didn't hold on to the ball, which would be problematic if he was completing passes. But he chose to throw it into the stands most times instead of being mauled alive (and was athletic enough to do so) but per the geniuses here who apparently just look at the highlights on YouTube that's somehow and indictment of the DL..

Also as Lu said Garvin is being asked to spy and contain a lot this season. So blame Baker on that one if you want.

I will say it again, the DL coach is below average and they need to hire a legit DL coach, not only that but the DC is not only hurting our DL, but our defense as a whole with all of these stupid gimmicks.

I totally agree. He is our best rush DE, we need him to do what he does best.

You are talking as if I don’t think Garvin is good. I think Garvin is a good college player that gets drafted on day 3. We had tons of fans talking before the season about him being one of the best DEs in the country and a 1st or 2nd round pick. You can be overrated/overhyped and still a good player.

It’s early in the season and he’s being judged on what he should be doing rather than what he’s being asked to do. I’m watching this kid 10 yards downfield or crashing into OL. Let’s wait and see a little on this one. I get the caution to too much hype. Believe me. I just don’t think this a totally fair judgment at the moment.

Tough to get sacks when the opponent never drops back to pass. Of the 15 or so passes Bethune called, 10 were screens or little roll out shovel throws to avoid pressure. Baker is calling a defense to best stop the opponent, not pad individual stats. When you play a quarterback who doesn't drop back in a traditional passing style offense like we have in week 0 and week 3, you have to adjust how you play him. The goal is more about containing the QB run game than rushing upfield trying to get sacks while opening up running lanes for a run first QB. I'm not making excuses for Garving because I haven't broken down footage of him in actual pass rush situations but I have noticed the defense adjusting the way they play against running QBs and it's been generally effective.
