Jimmy Johnson told me that he and UM athletic director Blake James have texted and “I let him know I’m available if he wants a sounding board” on the coaching search. A UM source said James will take J.J. up on the offer.

Johnson says candidates shouldn’t be limited to people with UM ties. “You want the best candidate,” he said. “There are some outstanding individuals who will be interested in this job. I wouldn’t want any restriction.

“The University of Miami is a very unique place – there are obviously some things Miami does not have that some other top schools do have --- but Miami has some advantages – being in such a great area for recruiting. For a football coach, if you want to win, you’ve got a great opportunity. I still think it’s a great job but it takes the right individual.”

He doesn't sound too senile anymore now that he stopped defending Golden.

ok..JJ also recommended Wanstedt to take over for him when he left the Dolphins. He is not infallible, but he is worth a listen.

I will see JJ next week at the Lauderdale boat show...

he was a golden supporter, but all ex coaches have to say the right things.

interesting who he thinks deserves the job

Do you think JJ wanted Golden to fail? Of course not, so he supported him. Do you think he was going to publicly criticize him? Of course not.

I love Jimmy, but my recollection is that he recommended Shannon, Wannstadt, and he has endorsed Golden repeatedly. Not so sure he's the right source for identifying the right UM head coach.

Just hire Butch Davis. He will energize the fan base, lock up S. Fla. recruiting, put together a top staff, and wreak havoc on the ACC.

Jimmy was the best back in the 80s. Since then, he's recommended Wannstache, Shannon and been a big public supporter of Folden. Dude's wearing the collar. Love what he did here, but I'm not so sure how closely he follows college football.
