I wrote this back in January before Manny was hired:

It's been 16 years. We've had 4 coaches in that time and got them ALL wrong. For us to compete at the National Championship level, we need someone who has PROVEN themselves at the National Championship level as a head coach. If you don't get a coach with this 'Relevancy' then it's just a gamble that has a very low percentage of working out in the modern football era.

Keep in mind that all the following info is BEFORE THESE COACHES CAME TO MIAMI and BEFORE THE 2019 SEASON
List of Miami Coaches in the past 16 years before they were hired at Miami

Mark Richt
Georgia (2002 – 2015)
Mark Richt did not make it to the SEC Championship one time in his final 10 years at Georgia.
  • 0 National Championship Appearances
  • 2 Conference Championships - SEC (2002, 2005)
  • 4 Losses (2006), 5 Losses (2009), 7 Losses (2010), 4 Losses (2011), 5 Losses (2013)
Al Golden
Temple (2006-2010) 5 Years
Al Golden did not get to the MAC title game in his 5 years at Temple.
  • 0 National Championship Appearances
  • 0 Conference Championships
  • 11 Losses (2006), 8 Losses (2007), 7 Losses (2008), 4 Losses (2009), 4 Losses (2010)
Randy Shannon
No Head Coaching Experience

Larry Coker
No Head Coaching Experience
Coker won a national title in his 1st year with the best college football team ever assembled. The team was mainly assembled by Butch Davis. Coker's decline started as these players started leaving the team.

List of AVAILABLE head coaches with National Championship 'Relevancy'

1. Jim Tressel
Youngstown State University (1986-2000)
  • 6 FCS National Championship Appearances (Won 4)
Ohio State University (2001-2010) (made approximately 3.5 million in 2010)
  • 3 National Championship Appearances (Won 1*)
  • 7 Conference Championships - Big Ten (2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010**)
  • 5 Losses (2002), 4 Losses (2004)
Only lost 1 or 2 games in a season (including bowls) in 7 out of 10 years at Ohio State. He was let go from Ohio State University because of the tattoo incident. He is currently the President at Youngstown State University and making about 300k.
*The call. Yes it was a bad call but Miami was supposed to blow them out and Tressel kept them in the game. Respect.
**Ohio State vacated all wins from the 2010 season and its share of the championship due to NCAA violations

2. Bob Stoops
Oklahoma Head Coach (1999-2016) (made approximately 5.6 million a year in 2016)
  • 4 National Championships Appearances (Won 1)
  • 10 Championships - Big Twelve (2000, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016)
  • 5 Losses (1999), 4 Losses (2005), 5 Losses (2009), 5 Losses (2014)
Stoops finished in the top 5 seven times and is the only head coach in the BCS era to have won the Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, and Sugar Bowl. Bob Stoops retired after the 2016 season and is still currently retired.

3. Urban Meyer
Bowling Green (2001-2002) || Utah (2003-2004) || Florida (2005 – 2010) || Ohio State (2012 - 2018) (made approximately 7.6 million at Ohio State in 2018)
  • 3 National Championships Appearances (Won 3)
  • 7 Conference Championships - Mountain West Conference Twelve Championships (2003, 2004), SEC Conference Championships (2006, 2008), Big Ten Championships (2014, 2017, 2018)*
  • 4 Losses (2007), 5 Losses (2010)
Urban Meyer has only had 2 seasons where he lost more than 4 games in his 17 years of coaching at 4 different Universities. He went undefeated at Utah in 2004 and at Ohio State in 2012*.
*Ohio State finished first in their division and was 12-0 but was banned from post season play due to sanctions.

4. Butch Davis
University of Miami (1995-2000) || North Carolina (2007-2010) || FIU (2017 - Present) (made approximately 1 million a year at FIU in 2018)
  • 1 National Championships Appearances (Won 1)*
  • 3 Conference Championships - Big East (1995, 1996, 2000)
  • 6 Losses (1997)**, 4 Losses (1999) || 8 Losses (2007), 5 Losses (2008), 5 Losses (2009), 5 Losses (2010) || 5 Losses (2017), 4 Losses (2018)
Butch Davis created the best college football team ever.
*In 2000, Miami was ranked 2nd in both polls but 3rd in the BCS. They would have played Oklahoma for the National title game in the Orange bowl if the BCS computers had them ranked at 2nd.
**
Miami was under sanctions from 1996-1998 and lost 31 scholarships during that time.

There are other coaches out there that do not have National Championship Relevancy such as:
Mario Cristobal
Manny Diaz (I love Manny and thank him for everything he has done, but he has never been a head coach)
Mike Leach
Dana Holgorsen
PJ Fleck
Neil Brown
Rob Chudzinski (I love Rob and he is probably one of the best tight end coaches ever but has never been on a championship level as a head coach)
Greg Schiano (Miami had a lethal defense in 99-00 but he hasn’t had national championship level 'Relevancy' as a head coach)
Lane Kiffin (Never been to a national title game as a head coach)
Mike Norvell
Mark Stoops (Great DB coach but not a good head coach. He didn’t win over 8 games in any season in his 8 years at Arizona)
Dino Babers
Tee Martin

We have not hired someone with National championship 'Relevance' as a head coach for the past 16 years. I personally would go after Jim Tressel because he made 3.2 million when he left Ohio State and is currently only making 300k. His resume is outstanding and has NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 'RELEVANCY'. Bob stoops and Urban have National Championship 'Relevancy' but Miami is a private university and is not funded like bigger public universities so it will be near impossible to afford them. Butch was responsible for the greatest college football team in history but has not been National Championship 'Relevant' at North Carolina or FIU.
