What if we didn't want some of those "top 5s"?

I see top 5s with Hakeem Williams, King Mack, Jalen Brown in them… In all fairness, Zaquan Patterson was as well.

We have 1 above average season under our belt. I'm not ready to sing any praises.

He played a few years for them. I don't remeber him ever being the top DE but i know he was a top 100ish player. Bama made it worth his while to grayshirt in the pre NIL days.

Lol…OK but that's a different convo and as usual, a deflection.

I agree it's a step in the right direction but it needs to be built upon.

And it doesn't help that we're in a location where every "foe foe" Cover-3 running high school coach thinks they know more than the staff at the University of Miami.
They would destroy us if we moved James or let him transfer.

The only solution is to win big and start sending kids to the NFL. Once we do that, we'll have enough clout to dictate terms to ANYBODY.

I doubt Saban or Smart has/had to deal with this. (at least to this extent)

smart had to deal with it with stevenson....thats why he came back here.lol he didnt like him much n wanted to play cb more so than where smart was moving him to. Worked out for stevenson because he was the goods at cb.

Not a big sample size at all. And he has to be given credit for passing or at least not anti-ing up for Williams right? @Coach Macho warned us on this kid being talented but overrated and flat out soft, and both he and CMC seem to be right.

Just of the back. (speaking from a s.fla local standpoint) ..Hakeem Williams and Dia Bell ARENT 5 STAR level talents. Calvin Russell also is questionable to some lol

One of the most common things I deal with is OTHER people telling me WHAT POSITION a kid should play (particularly based on how they LOOK).

I've got kids RIGHT NOW who people are telling me should move to Linebacker. Meanwhile, the kid can't read a Linemen to save his life, isn't a braniac (LB's need brains), doesn't know the system (fronts, etc), is a "crash out" and lacks composure, isn't a leader, isn't a good communicator, etc etc etc...
Basically none of the intangibles that it takes to be a great Linebacker.

But he should be a Linebacker because of how he looks.

Keep in mind, I've produced multiple All State Linebackers (out of kids who nobody wanted), 2023's Brian Piccalo award winner (after he sat the bench at Chaminade for 3 years) and 2024's Miami Herald Defensive Player Of the Year.

Yet, kids (and sometimes coaches) will STILL tell ME what position a player should be playing, just like James Williams told Miami.

Point of the story (rant) is...
We (adults) created a culture of appeasement and cooperation with young people who haven't even earned it. Entitlement to the extent that they will actually tell grown men who have decades of experience what position they are going to play... IN THEIR DEFENSE.

And because we slurp these children and pay them a lot of money, we appease them because we're scared that they will walk.

I had to watch film on James Williams (Western) when I was preparing for Columbus. I saw one of the worst tackling efforts I've EVER SEEN from a high school Safety, which was a large reason why Henry Parrish racked up over 260 yards rushing that night.

I'm a firm believer that YOU ARE WHO YOU ARE. And it doesn't matter what position you play, the will and "want to" doesn't change. If you don't wanna tackle at Safety, you ain't gonna want to tackle at LB. (and you certainly aren't going to wanna strike blockers)

This... my friends... is what happens when you're a star athlete from a young age and you are brought up in a culture of appeasement and cooperation (from adults). At some point the kid believed he was a safety, and nobody with any balls stepped in and gave him a dose of reality. And it didn't change until big money (NFL) was involved.

The sad thing is...
If someone had the balls to give this kid a reality check 10 years ago, he may have very well been a first rounder at the Linebacker position.

Him as a hybrid inside linebacker that can play the edge too or vice versa would have maximized his impact. Kid looked up to Sean Taylor his whole life but nobody told him thats a 1 of 1 player

he lost out in trainin gcamp to cedric gray to start....cedric gray is third in the nfl in tackles.

hes played a ton of special teams for them. And i think last week they were giving him some olb/edge work in practice which is hilarious considering i told him he would be a de back n the day.....

hes probably not gonna be at the titans next year id say

Yeah, you only have to wonder how many guys would have played another position better, and moving happens all the time - all that aside, thank God somebody picked right for Toney.
