James Williams

jihadd didnt switch to anything really was my point. He wasnt a safety asking to be played down. Jihaad was a de and wr in high school playing lb in college...Miami has recruited those types forever. Thats a normal position move that he was actually recruited as. Jihad was recruited as a line backer

We werent held hostage...he just outplayed the safeties they recruited. Thats obviously clear considering the year he leaves we have the worst safety play in history that causes us a chance in the playoffs because our secondary was so bad.

We held our selves hostage.
Whether or not he outplayed the safeties or not there's no dispute in the FACT he held us hostage. He flat out said he would transfer to ufag if we forced the position switch. Only reason he listened in his last year is because of the NFL feedback he got saying NFL had no interest in him at safety but a lot of teams would like to see what he could do at backer or with his hand down. By the way two things can be true and in this case are. He did outplay the safeties that we were able to play and he did hold us hostage. The reason both are true is because his insistence to play safety denied us the ability to develop someone opposite Kam. Agree with it or not is what it is. Only way it could be said we held ourselves hostage is because we were so worried about the optics of a 5 star DB from Miami transferring to ufag that we never forced the issue. Much the same as what Mandy did with pope.

@Golsen82 @DC3 are you doin that today cause of this comment? Might wanna read the rest of anything I ever said about James. But I'll tell you and save you the time for when you fact check. I said at safety the kid was lost. Was afraid of contact and took bad angles. He was always threatening to transfer to Florida who liked him at safety if we tried to force the move to linebacker or edge. But if he'd get his reps in kid could be really special at either... So apparently the Tennessee titans agree since they like him at backer long term. Crazy part is now that he's in the weight room and adding size and learning the backer position, he's shown his frame could add even more size. If he continues to bulk up to where they could play him as an added rusher off the edge or outside he could be a serious game changer.
I was just wondering if he really had a torn labrum that long?

Man, I wonder what the Butch - da gawd- would have done if he had a player that didn’t want to change positions. Sheeeeet, he had DJ & Najeh switch positions.
Butch would've told him there's a spot on the bench for you
All the same the game was in a different place. Optics werent as widely contested or viewed. He didn't care what other people thought from outside the program. He also had beyond enough clout built up that we all knew if Butch said this is what he wants and this is why, we just did it. Kids now hold all the power. Coaches are essentially baby sitters.

Nah it was more thread got bumped and i read and liked your comment before seeing the date. His tackling issues have been one you've been on since day one and was in agreement with you.

Only as a single high safety; where he was out a position.

Question, what safety will do we have on our roster that will be better than James in the box?
James had poor technique, took bad angles and case could be made he wasn't a willing tackler(possibly that's because he tried to shoulder tackle everyone opposed to rapping up I guess) what about his ACTUAL GAME, OR HIS ACTUAL STATS ,tell you he would've been a good box safety? Combine that with what about the rest of our back end (linebackers,DBS) led you to believe we could've had anyone designated as a box safety? We needed all the help we could get. Now the last part of your question on who was on the roster who MIGHT'VE been better. It's very hard to say when as a result of him refusing to adapt we couldn't give anyone snaps to develope. Hard to replace someone if everyone you have with potential sees they won't get the opportunity and transfers out. Wasn't some large selection of people I would've liked to see. But one or two intrigued me. Overall not replacing him with a portal addition was a failure on the staff as a whole. Both Mandy who should've made that clear from day 1 to Mario who didn't enforce it, optics be damned.

Yes we did hold ourselves hostage but he was adamant about not switching. I’m not surprised he threatened to transfer. Don’t you remember him telling Charlie strong to fvck his own face when Charlie suggested he try LB?

lol i know James personally.

I told him he would be a de when he was in the eleventh grade.

I mean i wasnt fully for a move to lb "HERE" for him...because if you say someone is sh*t at tackling...moving them to lb isnt actually the place to put them. lol

But he has strength as a strongside backer in the nfl.....and he actually seemed solid from the point of playing it at the sr bowl so clearly the way we presented it to him never was that appealing. Clemson found a way to utilize isaiah simmons in a way we probably could of used James. Isaiah is way more athletic but James wasnt a terrible blitzer....thats why i said we held our self hostage. didnt recruit the safety position well clearly and didnt use the kid as a swiss army knife type that logged some snaps int he back end to keep him happy.

It was obvious James was out of position and also that he wasn’t taking to development well. I posted when we landed him that he should be closer to the line but won’t tackle so I don’t know what his position should be. Should have been LB or even DE from jump if he would just lean into tackling.

One of the most common things I deal with is OTHER people telling me WHAT POSITION a kid should play (particularly based on how they LOOK).

I've got kids RIGHT NOW who people are telling me should move to Linebacker. Meanwhile, the kid can't read a Linemen to save his life, isn't a braniac (LB's need brains), doesn't know the system (fronts, etc), is a "crash out" and lacks composure, isn't a leader, isn't a good communicator, etc etc etc...
Basically none of the intangibles that it takes to be a great Linebacker.

But he should be a Linebacker because of how he looks.

Keep in mind, I've produced multiple All State Linebackers (out of kids who nobody wanted), 2023's Brian Piccalo award winner (after he sat the bench at Chaminade for 3 years) and 2024's Miami Herald Defensive Player Of the Year.

Yet, kids (and sometimes coaches) will STILL tell ME what position a player should be playing, just like James Williams told Miami.

Point of the story (rant) is...
We (adults) created a culture of appeasement and cooperation with young people who haven't even earned it. Entitlement to the extent that they will actually tell grown men who have decades of experience what position they are going to play... IN THEIR DEFENSE.

And because we slurp these children and pay them a lot of money, we appease them because we're scared that they will walk.

I had to watch film on James Williams (Western) when I was preparing for Columbus. I saw one of the worst tackling efforts I've EVER SEEN from a high school Safety, which was a large reason why Henry Parrish racked up over 260 yards rushing that night.

I'm a firm believer that YOU ARE WHO YOU ARE. And it doesn't matter what position you play, the will and "want to" doesn't change. If you don't wanna tackle at Safety, you ain't gonna want to tackle at LB. (and you certainly aren't going to wanna strike blockers)

This... my friends... is what happens when you're a star athlete from a young age and you are brought up in a culture of appeasement and cooperation (from adults). At some point the kid believed he was a safety, and nobody with any balls stepped in and gave him a dose of reality. And it didn't change until big money (NFL) was involved.

The sad thing is...
If someone had the balls to give this kid a reality check 10 years ago, he may have very well been a first rounder at the Linebacker position.

Whew. You are lucky to be alive. Blessed. You could still be held hostage. All these players holding the Avengers staff hostage is fascinating. Something not seen since how Coker became the Head Coach at Miami...

I am glad Williams spared you.

i swear lol

I'm lucky to still be here..(even though he high tailed it down the bleachers when i said it)

Strange that kids don't want to listen to good advice. Way more money at edge rusher than at Safety in the league. Top edge rusher is making 20 mil more than the top safety.

IMO (cause I wouldn't know I am on the outside observing) Butch would have that aura to make him change. We had so much clout at that time that JW would have switched, we had superior talent everywhere and we were the U. Butch is like Saban telling you to switch, you will listen.

Facts.

Its funny we did the same **** we did with Ray Ray with JW. Both should have been LBs from the jump but since they were 5 stars we let them dictate where they play then the NFL told both they were LBs.

Yep. Manny wasn’t credible. But not listening to Steele and Strong? Don’t get me wrong, I’m wishing the best for JW. But with all due respect to the young man, that’s just plain stupid.

I read a few ppl post we didn’t want him to transfer to Florida. Are we suddenly scared of James Williams, safety, university of Florida?

Man, I wonder what the Butch - da gawd- would have done if he had a player that didn’t want to change positions. Sheeeeet, he had DJ & Najeh switch positions.
True, but DJ only played fullback his true freshman year because Miami was stacked at linebacker in 2000. DJ was a great athlete and was an excellent running back in high school. 5* LB. This was more of a case of a player who excels at both so you get them on the field however you can.

Najeh was a team player. He shared duties his whole career. His biggest problem was he couldn’t stay healthy, in college or in the NFL. I still remember a 65-70 yard TD run he had down the sideline against Cincinnati. One of the most awesome runs I’ve ever seen from such a big man. Looked like he was running a 4.3 at 240lbs. Underappreciated as a running back at Miami because of all the time he had to share with other great players. A healthy Najeh may have put Portis on the bench, or at least taken a lot of of Clinton’s PT.
