“This win for Miami was special,” Johnson told Rivals.

Johnson is no stranger to Miami’s campus. He’s been around the program plenty, knows the staff well, and hears from someone on the coaching staff every day. The local star admits the Hurricanes always leave a strong impression.

“It always feels good to be at the U,” Johnson said. “Miami is always a vibe. It was great to be there for their win over Notre Dame.”

The atmosphere stood out to Johnson, who pointed to several moments that left an impact.

“When Malachi Toney, also known as Baby Jesus, caught that deep ball, that was a big highlight,” Johnson said. “Then, when Ruben Bain came up with the pick, followed by CJ’s (Daniels) one-handed catch for the touchdown, the energy was unreal.

“Those plays stood out, then meeting Ray Lewis was definitely a highlight for me because I’ve always admired how he played during his NFL career.”

While Johnson remains committed to Texas, Miami is firmly in the picture. With Signing Day still months away, the Hurricanes will continue to push for the elite defensive tackle in their backyard.

Asked about his status with the Longhorns, Johnson kept it simple:

“Stay tuned.”

Not sure if Mario will like this kids character. Some red flags with all the flipping. Would he fit the culture Mario is trying to build?

Miami is picking up steam with SEC commit

Miami made a statement Sunday night, knocking off Notre Dame 27-24 inside Hard Rock Stadium. The victory was big on the field, but it may prove just as important on the recruiting trail. The Hurricanes generated strong buzz with several top flip targets in attendance.
The name drawing the most attention is James Johnson, the five-star defensive lineman committed to Texas. Johnson has already flipped once — from Georgia to the Longhorns — and Miami has never let up in its pursuit to keep the Miami Northwestern standout home. When asked about his recruitment earlier this week, Johnson’s response was simple: “Stay tuned.” There is quiet optimism in Coral Gables that the Hurricanes could be in a position to pull this one off down the stretch.
