2026 James "JJ" Johnson 4* DT from Northwestern via Ft Myers Flips to Texas From UGA

I think EDGE & Mike LB is more essential to overall Team Defense, but it's a matter of varying degrees.

There are a lot of SEC teams who have great NFL caliber DT's & there Defense still sucks & they never win anything.
Brother you know the game far too well for me to have this conversation with you. I wouldn't necessarily disagree about the mike being probably the most important position on d. But a mike will never reach his potential without good dt play. Why I said if it's about recruiting I'd agree is because the most important differentiating factors of a defensive lineman come from the development of that defensive lineman not the differences they carry physically more often than not. It's about what their coaches teaching them for techniques for hand placement for footwork for hip movement for punch for upper body development for lower body development etc etc etc how their employed in the system are they three techniques are they five techniques are they one techniques are they strictly for the purpose of holding a blockers so safety's linebackers edges can make differences or are they disruptors on said defense. No position on defense has so many variants in the total defense that hinge on it like DT in my opinion. I say Mike might be the most important simply because he is more often than not the captain of the defense he's the one that makes your communication is on point He's the one that make sure you're reading a play correctly that everybody's lined up properly etc so from front for the mid three to back four assuming whatever defense You are running that Mike is responsible for that. But a DT is responsible for actual play once the ball is snapped If you don't have good DT play you're in a tough spot.

I’ll say this, and I said it earlier on The kennedy thread, while Johnson is rated higher, the one thing he does not have, is Kennedy‘s natural size. And like I said, in that post, that’s the one thing our defense tackle room has been lacking. What we have plenty enough of, is dudes with Johnson’s physical build. So it’s just something to think about, I’m really glad we got Kennedy because we needed that type of defensive tackle in our room.

Good thing that this is a good year for quality high school DTs. Move on from the new leg humper, and let’s find someone else. This is why you recruit multiple kids for the same spots.

Cantwell, Wyman, Spafford for us

Fitzpatrick, Lamar, Johnson for them.

More battles to come.

Lamar is in their backyard I wouldn’t say that was really a battle.

Fitzpatrick was always following Kirby so really the only loss so far I guess would be Johnson. If Johnson stilled lived in New Jersey would it even be considered a battle? Only cause he lives down here a couple years ppl felt Miami should have some type of advantage.

I have it as Mario 3-0 over Kirby.

Miami will keep recruiting until he signs on the dotted line.

but yes DT recruiting not looking to
hot right now

I mean they have 2 4 stars with athletic traits you look for. It’s going about on pace as normal. Only cause ppl bought the hype being sold on this board do you all feel let down.

Miami has some work to do but the 2 DT they took out of Bama and Mississippi can’t be slept on.

I am very happy they took Bacon who I consider a "Big Fish" type DT , should be rated highet imo

and Kennedy is a legit 4⭐️ 1 Tech that we wont need to overpay in the portal.

However at the next level you need more than big fish. You need whales.

JJ
Nolan Wilson
Keshawn Stancil
BPW
Lamar Brown

those are whales. You need to land at least one and then you have a championship level position.

You cant recruit this postion good one year and that's it.

I am holding out hope that by the end of the year Miami is able to flip one of these guys.

I played Safety, and all I’ll say is that a Safety’s worst nightmare is playing behind weak DTs and MLBs.

That said and just my opinion, if I had to choose one over the other then give me a strong DT any day of the week. At least I know that he will be disruptive and improve my chances of stopping the RB before he gets into full stride, and he will throw off the timing of the passing play so I have a chance versus the receiver.

The staff didn't lead yall into thinking he was coming here. D$ even said it multiple times. I'm sorry but I don't classify a kid from Jersey who was then at Ft Myers before MNW as a local kid. Ever since I seen kids like Cormani and some we brought here, fuss made about them only to leave 1 season later, it is what it is. What i want to see is Scott, Jones, Bain, Blount, Lightfoot and Lowe etc. Terrorize offenses then become top round picks. Then we can pick who we want at DT. This is not me saying I didn't want kid or making excuses but we won alot of battles recently who are on the roster. We need to see production now.
