That’s where we’ve arrived and the similarities are startling. Franklin won his lone Big Ten title in year three (2016) and made the playoff last year in year 11.
His other years? An amalgamation of 9-11 win seasons with a 7-6 year sprinkled in here and there for good measure. Was he far more successful in conference than Mario has been so far? Yes, but he was also 4-21 against AP Top 10.
The bottom line is the results here under Mario will feel similar than the ones Franklin had at Penn State, and perhaps that’s even his ceiling as a coach. They both recruit at a high level but are stubborn and rigid, whose approaches to offense are rooted in physicality and hubris.
