despite the media’s insistence that Curt Cignetti invented “Google Me,” (he didn’t) and that him saying “….all i do is win everywhere i go; Look me up,” was a killer recruiting pitch —IU is still struggling to upgrade their recruiting despite a championship proof of concept.
This is pretty bizarre. No equivalent for it in CFB. In CBB, even a smaller schools like Villanova and Baylor saw an immediate boost in recruiting. Other programs who haven’t won in 20+ years still see the downstream effects of having won in the post segregation period whether that’s Maryland, NC State, Indiana, or elsewhere. Some but not all of the CFB champions similarly.
They were the first team to not meet the perceived blue chip ratio prerequisite for national champions and doesn’t look like they’ll be making that leap anytime soon. Mayfield will be their highest ranked commit (composite), and they lost two skill positions to guys to Louisville and Ohio State.
IU employs a strategy similar to UGA where they prioritize roster retention-performance raises/bonuses first and foremost; yet they spend much more in the portal than UGA. Money and winning cannot eradicate the importance of relationships and program perception writ large.
Going to be fascinating to see if they ever level up—keeping Monshun Sales, nicknamed ‘Bama who was born in Alabama, in-state would be a potential paradigm shift; still, we’ve seen five stars stay close to home plenty of times. Until IU signs numerous blue-chippers from out of state, they’ll always remain outside the top ten/fifteen in recruiting rankings.
