JAKE HEAPS

What if this is simply more mind games by Golden. Just a hunch, coaches feel comfortable with Heaps and his progress thus far and wanted to test Kaaya out by not telling him/the team about Heaps sitting out until right before the scrimmage in order to apply as much mental pressure on Kaaya as possible. Coaches do this quite frequently at other positions during Fall camp to test backups out but it is unorthodox to do so with your QB who from all accounts is still learning the Offense. But given our injuries and suspension woes AG might have wanted to throw Kaaya into the fire now just in case we need to actually throw him into the fire come Labor Day.

I can see AG doing something like this IF he is comfortable with Heaps development thus far and he simply used a minor injury as a chance to see how Kaaya responds under pressure.

Well, he does have that masters in psychiatry he earned at Penn State.

Not looking good:

Williams - Lower Extremity
Heaps - Upper Extremity
Kaaya - Healthy
Olsen - Suspended
Rosier - Healthy

One snap away from a 5th string true freshman getting meaningful snaps against a ranked opponent on the road in the opener.

Uggh.

i am not buying the he won the job and they were giving him a rest argument, that is for sure. either he stinks and they wanted kaaya to get more reps or he is legitimately hurt.

Golden gave several key Canes a non-injury day off on Saturday, allowing them to act as player-coaches during practice. Duke Johnson, Denzel Perryman, Anthony Chickillo, Shane McDermott, Ereck Flowers, Malcolm Lewis and Braxton Berrios all watched on out of uniform and with whistles. Golden said he wanted to find out which players would step up with that group missing.

So did you question Golden after Saturday's practiced? Heaps is a 5th year Sr., just maybe he's comfortable with him and wanted to see what Kaaya could do with all the reps in yesterday's scrimmage...

doubtful. holding him out of one of the two changes to get him critical game speed reps would be stupid and golden is not stupid.

no i didn't because that was a practice one day prior to the scrimmage. if you want to minimize injury why put all of your vets through those extra reps? heaps being a 5th year senior doesn't mean much as far as him having experience with this team.

Not Jake from State Farm, our insurance policy this season. Hopefully he's just resting his arm as stated, because we need both front runners out there week 1.

I think it was a legitimate close race between kaaya and heaps. Heaps had/has some arm issue/pain. Coaches knew he would need to be available for L'ville whether that be as the starter or back up if kaaya was in over his head. Rest heaps up and give kaaya the reps and the tacit nod as the starter.

Interesting theory, very possible.

^^^ Most likely scenario, IMO.

Kinda ridiculous we haven't named our starter and AG continues to play the "or" game with the depth chart
I understand that everyone wants to know who our starter will be 2 weeks before our first game. What is so bad about having competition leading up to Labor Day? It'll push them to work even harder than they already are. And why do we need to tip our hat to Louisville? Keep it in-house.

Tip our hand? There is zero film of any either of them in Coley's system. The film of Heaps at KU and BYU is useless, just like Kaaya's HS film.

Miami Hurricanes quarterback Jake Heaps wants to assure everybody his arm is just fine.

It may not have seemed that way Monday night, when word started to spread that he missed the evening scrimmage to rest his sore right arm. Given how much importance coach Al Golden has placed on quarterback performance in the preseason scrimmages, doubts about Heaps started to grow all around the Twitter-sphere to the repeated tune of hmmmmmmm ....

Such is life in the middle of a quarterback competition. One bit of news gets magnified tenfold until another bit of news comes along to tamp it down. So here it is, completely tamped down from Heaps himself:

"Everything is fine," Heaps told ESPN.com Tuesday in a phone interview. "I'm feeling good about everything, and just excited to get to practice Wednesday."

Heaps says he was held out of the scrimmage for precautionary reasons. While he sat on the sideline, true freshman Brad Kaaya threw two touchdown passes to grab a few headlines. But the competition to start at Louisville on Sept. 1 remains open between the two.

"They haven't given us a timetable on a decision," Heaps said. "They've kept everything pretty close to the vest, which I think is good because it just allows us to focus on every day and not worry about where we stand in certain points in time. It's about going out there each and every day and trying to take advantage of one practice and one rep at a time. That's all I'm concerned about, just trying to string a bunch of good days together and see where it falls. We're approaching Louisville here quickly, so I would imagine something would come in the near future, but I'm not concerned about that. I'm just focused on each practice that comes up."

Heaps says he has made the most of his two months on campus, since arriving as a transfer student from Kansas. Though there are no guarantees, he remains hopeful he will win the starting job.

"Obviously I'd be extremely disappointed if I didn't, but it's a long season and anything can happen so you have to have that mentality," he said. "At the end of the day, I don't regret anything. I've gone out and done everything that I could and laid it all on the line. At the end of the day, I have to look in the mirror and know if I gave it my all and I know that I have. I feel good about that. I'm just excited to continue practicing and see how everything ends up unfolding. I'll definitely be excited if I'm the guy.

Hmm...wonder if the depth chart will still be the same then?

If anybody here has played QB or been a pitcher in baseball soreness at the beginning of a season is completely normal and rest is always the smartest move you can make. 2 days and your usually back to normal. I once couldnt throw a football more than a few feet with dead arm early in camp. Few days later miraculously i had 100% strength back after not throwing for 2 days. Its a scary feeling but he should be all good.

You do not need a compression bandage for general soreness. Periodic ice/heat is all you need.

I'll go ahead and start it..

Any chance Heaps all of a sudden got dead arm going into a competition he could easily lose for the 3rd time??
