Jai Lucas and staff coaching style

Team is fun to watch but Painful when Altuntas goes to the foul line,he doesn't offer much I wonder if we have someone else to play the center role he has taken on, is there an injury? Face it, Altuntas isn't the athlete we need. Henderson oozes talent but seems to not know what to do when we work the clock, after seconds he stops moving as if he isn't sure what to do but when he comes into his own..watch out for his star potential. He will dominate opponents.
I think we need to give the Altuntas stuff a rest. Bro is like 9th in the rotation and losing Marcus Allen as a backup big has killed our depth there. Having to size up Henderson and Malovec isn’t ideal.

I’m not sure anyone has the answer to this but do you think there is a possibility that Lucas has always been around great players who have a high base of fundamentals, then he gets to Miami assuming his players will have that level and they don’t? We are honestly horrible at almost every aspect of fundamentals; FT shooting, defense, & turnovers.

It’s a testament to his coaching that we have 17 wins despite so many flaws but it’s concerning we don’t seem to be getting better at any of the above aspects.

Good luck having a balanced discussion on this one…

He is a young Coach. Right now he's drinking out of a fire hydrant. Thankfully he has good experienced support staff around him. He will get to the nuanced details soon.
... almost like Mario not prioritizing ST, difficult? Yes it is. There is only so much you can do in your first year.

Hopefully some players take up the leadership mantle and hold teammates accountable for missing FT s and dumb turnovers.

Per CBS Sports: "Miami is last in the ACC in 3-point-percentage defense (35.3) and just 12th in 3-point shooting on offense (34.2).

But what the Hurricanes do well is score inside, which is why they lead the ACC in field-goal percentage (51.1)."

Surprised we defend the 3 so poorly. With Lucas' defensive reputation and all.

As poorly as we defend the 3 we’re darn good at defending the paint

While we are virtually tied for last in that percentage, we aren’t last in actual points given up by three pointers. Look at Mikel Brown and Melvin Council did to NC State from 3….brutal.

NC State, SMU, Wake Forest, and FSU give up the most points from three pointers in the conference.

The stat you gave is also completely divorced from context. For example, Duke has one of the best defending three point percentages in the country, at 31%; that’s also because teams go in planning to shoot as many as possible to pull off the upset.

So while they are good on that one stat; 38% of all their opponents’ points are three pointers. That aligns them with NC State who we see has the same 35.2% as Miami above.

We’re at 35% on this statistic. Now, on to the last statistic.

MIAMI AND DUKE RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER

As you can see with this statistic, there are some great and mediocre squads in each of the screenshots. So that one stat doesn’t tell us much

His style is defense and rebounding as the foundation of his first year on campus.
They are first in the ACC in fast break points.
It is hard to cover all aspects as a first year coach when you have to build a complete roster because the previous coaching staff didn't leave you anything to work with.
Sure, I would hope the shooting improves next season and I am sure it will. This isn't a quick fix but no one can say they don't see the direction of the program nor the progress the team has made.
Just to put this in its proper perspective, Miami has 19 wins in the middle of February. Before the season, if would have told any of us that Miami will have 19 wins, most of us would have thought Miami made a deep run in the NIT tournament to get to 19 wins.
Now, on Saturday, Miami has a chance to win it's 20th game of the season in its first 25 games in year 1 of a first year coach with no previous head coaching experience on the college or pro level.
Honestly, this might be the best performance by a first year coach ever when you consider Jai didn't inherit any players from the previous staff nor he didn't bring any players from his previous job.
The job Jai has done in 6 months is historic with an upward trajectory.
