Nobody is saying that last year is not his redshirt year. Regardless of his redshirt status, as a transfer, he must sit out a year in residence at his new school unless the NCAA grants him a waiver. His redshirt status is not relevant to his immediate eligibility.

To me, if he is applying for a waiver, this will be the grounds. The academic part. He was very smart when he made that retirement statement.

Yeah the fact that he stated that as a reason for looking elsewhere is interesting and according to the waiver guidelines seems like it would certainly fit under there. Miami certainly has excellent music offerings in terms of majors

Redshirting has nothing to do with his eligibility in terms of being able to play this year. The angle here and what makes his case different is the fact that he retired due to injury. I believe that the retirement legally severed his ties to the UCLA program in terms of playing sports. Now that he has received a second opinion that clears him to play Phillips is able to resume his career at the school of his choosing. This is what I believe the legal interpretation will be.

so its the full sequence that has to occur - retirement due to medical condition and then subsequent second opinion that clears kid to play? by that standard Ahmmon Richards could get medical clearance and be immediately eligible somewhere else.

He could but not sure richards would risk that since his is a neck injury

Theoretically yes. I would also think that these cases would be judged individually according to each cases merit. Now that is just my guess as far as the legality. The actual legality may be different. My whole point is that I believe Phillips will be granted immediate eligibility because of the fact that he had retired due to concussion or what have you. The specifics of the law and the way it is written are unknown to me.

there is also this issue with his major being discontinued at UCLA. a couple of different angles. would love one of our great beat writers to score an interview with him so we can sort this out.

That would be great! Pondering the various legal strategies available in this particular case has been fun though. I hope I'm right. A healthy Jaelen Phillips in addition to Trevon Hill, Chigozie Nkoruka and Bubba Bolden would be an insane infusion of talent for this defense!

Or get medical clearance and be immediately eligible to play at Miami.

With that said, Richards playing career seems to sadly be over

Cis experts out in force pertaining to Phillips eligibility and when and if he is allowed to play. Cis posters love to play the supposition game. We will find out soon what the outcome of issues pertaining to Phillips will be. Decisions will be made by powers that be. Guessing game not necessary.
 
ESPN wrote late Thursday that Phillips will be eligible to play immediately for the Hurricanes "because his four-game 2018 season will count as a redshirt year, per NCAA rules." After checking with a number of sources early Friday, that report doesn't seem to be accurate as Miami is under the impression that Phillips is going to have to sit unless he applies for a waiver and gets one approved.
