Given what he's been through, he will declare and he should.
phillips has the pedigree (former number one recruit) and he's blossoming before our eyes ... they gush over this guy every broadcast ... you saw what happened with gr, he balled out last year and if we weren't for covid he'd be a safe top 5 pick at the moment ... that being said the most disappointing (yet true when it comes to miami) is this idea that if your a top 3 round pick you have to go ... that's such a short money approach ...I would be thrilled if Phillips stays, but a couple of things on this board are pretty big assumptions. If he comes back next year, there's no guarantee he becomes a top 5 pick, so he's not "leaving $15 million on the table". Also, the sooner you get in the league, the sooner you can start working on contract #2, where the real money is.
As long as you're a legit top 3 rounds pick - which means you'll make the roster - then I think you go pro unless something compelling (national title shot, love of the school, etc...) pulls you back for an extra year.
He might be a R1 player right now. He is certainly playing like it.
6.5 sacks. 5 sacks in the last 3 games. He will likely get 1-2 versus UNC. If Miami still plays GaTech, add another 1-2. Bowl game another 1-2 (he's that hot right now and you can tell in his play on the field its BAG SZN, playing with purpose). He's going to be a 10+ sack guy.
He's already at 14 TFL with 9.5 in the past 3 games. He's cooking with gas rn and playing with cero miedo.
I would love for him to come back. I think 2021 could be special with D'Eriq King and Jaelan Phillips coming back to Coral Gables...but this man is about to become a millionaire and he should go.
K'Lavon Chaisson went mid-R1. He was unrefined but all sorts of traits on traits on traits and twitch for days. I don't see why Phillips isn't in the same mold with similar draft stock. Go be a millionaire and thanks for balling out in a 10-1 season and go beat up the gators or the aggie cuck on your way out.
Every year there are maybe 115 legit top 3 round picks (96 actuals and some amount that would have gone in the top 3 but went back to school). I believe Phillips could be a top 5 pick if he stays a year, but it's not a sure thing.phillips has the pedigree (former number one recruit) and he's blossoming before our eyes ... they gush over this guy every broadcast ... you saw what happened with gr, he balled out last year and if we weren't for covid he'd be a safe top 5 pick at the moment ... that being said the most disappointing (yet true when it comes to miami) is this idea that if your a top 3 round pick you have to go ... that's such a short money approach ...
This ^^ is another one of those takes that … well, it’s the same stupid argument that unscrupulous agents use to get kids to jump early with the scant chance at latching on with an NFL team.I would be thrilled if Phillips stays, but a couple of things on this board are pretty big assumptions. no fascination ... i'm watching chase young and i'm thinking to myself the effort and movement screams phillips, however young was celebrated for an entire year of college football and turned it in to a top 3 pick ... it's on him if he goes or stays ... but based on the brand we provide and his raw talent, plus a year of national recognition, he could be set for life ala young

You are crazy if you think this. He’s more athletic than chase young... this kid tested as a top athlete at end in highschool and even played safety at timesPhillips doesn't have the bend like Chase Young and isn’t as athletic. What he does have is more raw power, speed, and a higher motor.
I don’t think. I know. You’re the one that needs to watch more football eh bud.You are crazy if you think this. He’s more athletic than chase young... this kid tested as a top athlete at end in highschool and even played safety at times
Naw you do, several of your tales recently have been bad man. Phillips is an elite athlete and more athletic than chase youngI don’t think. I know. You’re the one that needs to watch more football eh bud.
Also, the NFL Salary CAP is going down not up like in the years past. If he wants the most Money then wait for next year where the CAP should go up.Agree with Cribby. He should get Insurance, refine his craft further and prove he's durable for another season so that he gets drafted in the first round next year. If he goes this year, his draft position will NOT reflect his talent and he'll leave a ton of money on the table.
based of HS #s maybe. Phillips was a man before Young. You need to work on reading comprehension even more than watching more football. I said Phillips has more raw power, speed, and motor. He does not possess the natural bend and fluid lateral movement like Young. Young completely reshaped his body and gained 30lbs of muscle during college. He led the nation in sacks and was the consensus best defensive player in the entire draft. So you saying Phillips is better than Rousseau and the top defensive player in country? Phillips has 4.5 sacks.Naw you do, several of your tales recently have been bad man. Phillips is an elite athlete and more athletic than chase young
I hope you're right, Phillips stays, and he goes top five next year. However, pretending that it's a clear cut decision is over simplifying. This ^^ is another one of those takes that … well, it’s the same stupid argument that unscrupulous agents use to get kids to jump early with the scant chance at latching on with an NFL team.
“The sooner you get in the league…” doesn’t erase the fact that GUARANTEED MONEY is what makes an NFL contract a contract, the rest is just a cruel suggestion.
The time to go pro is when you can’t improve your value or the likelihood is too risky.
- running backs are slotted, for the most part, for rounds 2-7. The amount of guaranteed money is so slim, comparatively, that it makes sense to go.
- ”POTENTIAL” (I have to capitalize because some don’t understand words like “if” or can’t make the logical leap that all of this is speculation) … first round picks are different because of the massive chasm of guaranteed money between the first 5 picks and the last 5 picks. If you’re “projected” late first/early 2nd — and staying another year won’t significantly improve your draft status, then you should leave. An analyst recently said that EVERY year he has a DE in his top-2 picks…if Phillips has the ability to be the top DE in college football next year, it’s worth at least $15M more than he’ll get this year…unless he goes top-5. Who thinks Phillips is a top-5 pick this year?
The only way you take the advice of the poster above is if you don’t understand money … and/or NFL football.
