ITT We Follow Potential 2015 Coaching Candidate Week 4

Chad Morris would do some unspeakable things here, but I would rather have a notorious, stingy, hard hitting, bone crushing, QB killing Defense that everyone fears like we had in our heyday.

Sadly, those almost don't even exist anymore. Even the best defenses get 40 dropped on them sometimes.

On defense, we just need a coach that wants to play an aggressive brand of football. With our talent, the rest should take care of itself.

Chuck pagano is, yano, only coaching for a top 5 NFL team this year. But yeah let's give chuck a call I'm sure he'll come through for an interview!
Gary Patterson has top 5 team & a great contract? He'll be on the first plane to Miami!

You deceptively listed Howard, Saban, JJ, and Ericksons positions as a means to justify your list. First, neither Howard or Lou were employed as head coaches before jumping to Miami (As Chuck is right now). Second, the program's JJ and Dennis (he coached at Washington state not Washington) were inferior to Miami at the time. TCU and UGA (while they don't have a stronger history) are further advanced w/ a better track record the past ten years. Only way bob stoops would come here is if he is fired. He is making 5.25 million a year. LOL @ UM even coming close to offering any candidate that money.

Lane and Chud are realistic candidates. For Chud I'm not sure how I feel about a candidate that has been out of the college grind for 12 years. One can cite Pete Carroll, but I don't believe Chud is as charismatic or strategic as Carroll. I'm not as down on Kiffin as others (considering our bare options), but I prefer other options to him. Unless he has humbled himself, I doubt UM would give him the keys to the Ferrari. The BOT did not like Dan Mullen's personality (which is reasonably according to the rumor mill around him) but Kiffin has a flashy style as well. Different from Mullen, but can rub people the wrong way. I would rank him above Cristobal without a doubt.

Our last three head coaches were two coordinators already on staff and a rising head coach (without a ten win season from the MAC). Get a grip.

NVA Cane has a great, realistic list

Pretty well known that he is either in the Super Bowl or they let his contract expire at the end of the year...and as great a defensive mind as he is, Grigson has built a **** defense there. Very little faith that is a Super Bowl team. You can bet Irsay won't hesitate for a second to back up the truck and get his guy Arians back, putting Pagano on the market.

And Pagano is more likely to go to Miami or another NFL job?

You never know man. I would have thought Harbaugh would be coaching the Raiders or the Bears this year if you told me last September that he would be fired after a winning season, regardless of whether the Michigan job was open. Sometimes these guys get burnt out, sometimes they just want a change of pace.

Miami is on the edge of total irrelevance. We need a real HC, not some coordinator or, worse yet, some coordinator who's proven to be a failure as a HC (see *****in, Lame and Rob Dudzinski).

If you don't hire Butch Davis, then make a real HC like Gary Pinkel tell you no. Pinkel is one of the absolute best in the business, but he knows he'll never win a NC at Missouri. If he's got that desire in him to finish his career as a winner, he might jump.

If not Davis or Pinkel, then get another guy who has proven he can win as a HC like Justin Fuente. In fact, if Fuente has another good year this year after losing most of his team from last year, then hire that mf'er immediately.

Another name I'm starting to like is Bud Foster. I would like to steal him while VT is sleepwalking with Beamer. We would have an elite defense and if he could just get an OC we would be great. IMO they probably beat OSU if their QB never got hurt, or they had a backup that was decent. VT defense kept them in that game and he always has a great game plan and really good adjustments.

Kill yourself

You are an idiot if you wouldn't take Bud Foster. I don't know the likelihood of him even coming here but he's a **** of a game day coach, recruits well (especially DT and DL in general), and he's been a staple of a winning program for what? 25 years at VT? I know they came to the Big east in the early 90s could be before then

Well then, I'm an idiot.

Bud Foster has been mentioned in head coaching searches for years and years. He either has no interest in being a head coach or ONLY has interest in taking over for Beamer when the time comes. Either way, I doubt arguably his biggest rival has a great chance to sway him, not to mention, while he is a great coordinator....I'm not so sure it isn't safe to say his best years are behind him.

UM

I'm not saying top of the list candidate. But it's a hire I would take if we reached out and ended up getting him. Just a name I never heard mentioned around this board, and I doubt he would actually leave VT either like you said he wants that job. But if we got him, would I be excited ? Absolutely.

I have always thought about Pinkel in the same way. Don't see why he wouldn't leave Mizzou SEC or not he is never going to win there. I agree with Fuente as well. Another similar name to Fuente is Mark Hudspeth. 4 straight 9-4 teams with 4 straight bowl wins at ULL. He's going to get a bigger job after this year no doubt... Especially if he takes the next step and wins 10+

No more MAC coaches like Justin Fuente. That formula has never worked here.

Erickson worked. I think Fuente is going to be great, if we can't get Patterson or Pinkel then someone off the Patterson tree would be a nice sub. Only after some NFL guys turn us down though.

Just my opinion but no way do we hire butch even though we all want him. The same group that hired coker, shannon and golden is not going to bring butch back. Especially after the mess at unc. I know i know he wasnt linked to it but he was there during that time.

I personally think chud is our best option. He runs a great offense and he has nfl experience. As a carolina panthers fan i got to watch every game he called and he was amazing.

Sorry, but I think we'll have a hard time finding a new coach of ANY caliber. The school pays peanuts, has limited facilities, and a stadium almost 30 miles from campus. Recruiting grounds are among the best anywhere, but most of the really talented kids will always go to FSU or UF. We get their leftovers unless we're winning BIG. Among coaches, the Miami job is known as a chit job because schools that have on campus facilities (including stadiums) and pay big, state sponsored salaries are just nicer jobs all around. We'll have to find lightning in a bottle like we did with Schnelly and JJ to be great again. And THAT is going to be very hard to do in this day and age.

I don't care what conference they are from. I don't think Golden ever had the resume to come here anyway. No bowl wins, no 10 win seasons. All he had was "turning around temple" More like moving from big east to MAC and being successful because they finally had the talent to match up with their competition.

Hudspeth and Fuente have a bowl win on their resume. Fuente comes from the Gary Patterson tree (I would love to at least gauge interest on patterson first). Fuente also has a 10 win season on his resume and can add to that this year. Hudepth can get a 10 win season on his resume this year to go with 4 straight 9-4 seasons and 4-0 in bowl games plus what happens this year, if it is good, you can't deny he is a winner.

Fans and alumni shouldn't accept that. We can't afford to gamble on our next coach. We need someone who's gonna come in and win big, guaranteed. That's the only way they're gonna get this handled.

Bring in someone who has proven they can win at this level. Not the MAC. Not a coordinator.

If our facilities are a problem, admin has noone to blame but themselves. Upgrade them. They had a golden opportunity with this Beckham thing and they fumbled it.

And cry me a river if they don't want to pay for a better coach. They want all sorts of money and donations, and they complain that ppl don't go to games, but they do NOTHING to earn it.

You want the fans to come back.... then make the necessary investments.

There are no guarantees.

You had Lane Kiffin on your list. You think he's guaranteed to win big at Miami?

I have a novel idea. If you want someone from the Gary Patterson tree.... HIRE GARY PATTERSON. He's at TCU for christ sake. TCU. Good God, Michigan just hired a coach from the San Francisco 49ers, Alabama hired a coach from the Miami Dolphins, and we can't steal TCU's coach????

This program is going to drive me to drink.

No, but he's better than some coach from Memphis. He coached the Raiders, as in the NFL. And USC. It's not even comparable.

1. We could've hired Patterson when he was at a "MAC" school back in 2006, but we pulled the trigger on Shannon instead. Now he's making $4 million at TCU, they've moved to a Power 5 conference, and they're ranked #3 in the nation. Highly doubt he's going anywhere, but sure, I'd give him a call.

2. Saban resigned because he was a bad fit in the pros.

3. Harbaugh was fired. He wasn't poached from the 49ers.

We can't just hire whoever the **** we want. Coaches have to actually be available.
