Mark Richt gave us a get-out-of-jail-free card conditioned upon us hiring Manny Diaz.
Moving on.... Manny Diaz is our coach. There is nothing we can do about that. Every Canes fan wants the same thing. Miami Hurricane Success! Can Manny become a successful head coach at the University of Miami? Truthfully, we do not know. We have nothing to base an answer on. All we have is Hope.
Like Manny Diaz, Al Golden had an incredible talk game. He used all the buzzwords that Miami Hurricanes fans wanted to hear. In my opinion, Al Golden wanted to win really bad. He just didn't know how. Plus, he was loyal to a fault. He was well organized and if he had made one simple staff and scheme change he may still be the coach at the University of Miami.
Manny Diaz must avoid the same mistakes that Al Golden and Mark Richt made.
First, Manny must avoid hiring friends. He must hire quality assistant coaches and hold them to a high standard. If those quality assistant coaches happen to be friends, so be it..but he must not hesitate to replace them if they fail to meet a high standard.
Second, Manny must convince himself that he does not have to be the smartest guy in the room. Bear Bryant stated that he had no use for a coach that was not smarter than he was. He said his job was the referee fights and make final decisions. Manny must be a strong and sometimes brutal CEO.
Lastly, Manny needs to understand that there will be no honeymoon when it comes to the fans. That doesn't mean that Manny can't lose games. It simply means that the beauty of whatever he is building should be easily identifiable through the dirt aka losses. Maintaining the current offensive staff and expecting a different result will turn the fans against him quickly. Manny should clean house on the offensive side of the ball and rebuild the house in His image. If he wants an aggressive and high-powered offense, he needs to hire the appropriate coaches and hold them to a high standard. Manny should also understand that Banda and Patke are not qualified to be defensive coordinators, especially at a championship-caliber program. Manny should hire a quality defensive coordinator and retain Patke and Banda as position coaches.
There it is, folks. We all want Manny Diaz to be successful. We are hungry for success. In a few weeks, Manny will give us an indication if he has what it takes. I can wait till then.
