It’s interesting that the only real offensive success Dawson has ever had according to the analytics is when his RB went down that year at Houston and he went to classic Air Raid attack.

This year he’s basically done the same even with a pretty stacked RB room.

I worry about the condensed sets from a QB that isn’t Cam Ward. But the QB is Cam Ward, so there’s nothing to complain about F+’s 8th ranked offense.

Is there a world where we keep this passing attack air raid going but beefing up the running game?? Is it a matter of he hasnt showed much variety in running plays?

No, it’s a matter of defenses wanting to play man coverage with a single high safety. They will adjust, and we will have lighter boxes to run into. We’ll also get our all-conference and NFL player at left tackle back very soon.

Y’all really gotta chill with all this stuff (not you @Cane44, just the board in general). When we’ve needed to run the ball, we have. Pretty sure we have a 100% success rate in short yardage. We had 3 short TDs last week. But when we don’t have to run it, we’re throwing it. Which seems to have been working fine, considering our quarterback has the shortest odds to win the Heisman trophy of anyone in the country. It’s 2024. You don’t have to “establish the run” to win. I don’t see any snow games in our future. Teams are dictating how they want us to play them, and we are HAPPILY obliging. I’d imagine that changes pretty soon, and you’ll see us run for 200 yards in a game while it’s still in doubt.

Even with all this dialogue about the running game, you know where we rank in yards per carry this year? 8th in the country.

It's both. Teams have come out stacking the box and Cam is picking them apart. Wouldn't surprise me to see future opponents try to play more zone/zone blitz against us and watch Martinez and Lyle go off.

I do think that some of the "run straight ahead into the 8-man front plays" are a set up for future opponents as well. Look for more outside stuff/deception as the season goes on. Dawson hasn't really had to diversify the run calls yet. When I did my initial breakdown of his scheme back when he was hired, I saw a lot more than what he's currently showing.

Short answer - we'll take what the defense gives us. If they continue to stack the box and play man, Cam will have his pick of targets. If they loosen up, watch the run game "suddenly" take off.

I think so, because we are running the Air Raid out of condensed sets.

And while the Air Raid isn’t as spread as the Veer and Shoot, the hallmark of it is still spread out lineman and spread out WRs.

The reason we don’t do that, I’d imagine, is because we want to be able to battering ram you at any moment as well.

My one question is whether the condensed looks we consistently run as our base offense, does impact the explosive run potential?

It’s not like we can’t run the ball at all. Adjusting for opponent, we’re pretty good at running down success rate. As we were last year. What we aren’t good at, just as the previous two years, is getting anything behind the minimum amount of yards for the play to be successful. And that’s now become a pattern.

And I do wonder if that’s because the box is just never thinned out when the set is condensed. So we get the 4 yards or 5 yards. But not much else.

But that could also be a RB problem over these 2+ seasons.

I am amazed that the concept of throwing against stacked boxes goes over "fans'" heads. 7+ in the box means throw it, assuming your not in a heavy set and it's not 3rd and inches. Best part? We will continue to see this theme on CiS until we have some massive breakout run game and then the "what's wrong with our passing game" threads will start.

It’s so odd to see such stacked boxes every week… it’s been said but teams are **** bent on not getting ran on that they play man and soft zone and let cam absolutely pick them apart

Some team will do the opposite and that game is when we see the running game explode

I guess if I'm a HC or DC, I may be looking at the opponents and convince myself that the only reason Cam was so successful is the previous opponents sucked. I'll convince myself that:

"We're not those teams though and I feel more confident in MY defenses ability to get pressure on Cam and force him to make mistakes."

I imagine someone eventually concedes that fact and honestly, probably happens on Friday. USF was aggressive as h3ll, crowded the LOS, and doing everything in their power to get to Cam.

Pry will respect Cam and do the opposite. You're going to have to prove you can run the ball because we're dropping 8 guys every time and forcing you to methodically work your way down the field.

What do you think about leaving Bell at LT and moving Rivers inside when he comes back?

I don't.

EDIT: Didn't want to come off like I'm being a ****. I just don't think that's the best move. Bell is still very raw and not a starting LT at this level. He was OK against USF. Struggled the week before. IMO our best line has Rivers at LT. Bell has a lot of potential, but he needs work.

I'm shocked teams are rather choosing to let cam cook and take away the run game.. seems backwards but I won't complain

I expect to see 2 deep safeties soon..

I think it’s the condensed sets. Even when teams aren’t trying to load the box we eliminate light boxes by having 10 players condensed.

I noticed this since Gattis, when we want to run the ball we tend to condense instead of spread out.

Personally I’d much rather have to make 6 blocks than 8 with more space but it’s just not us.

After last week Dawson said they only have shown 10-15% of the playbook. Just sit back and enjoy the ride bc what he has shown so far is clicking.
