Mario Cristobal, James Coley, and Mel Tucker are perhaps the three most terrifying candidates to serve as head coach, offensive coordinator, and defensive coordinator that anyone could possibly come up with. Those are the three coaches FSU and UF fans would place in those positions for Miami if it was up to them. And that seems to be what our cheap, apathetic, incompetent administration is possibly on the verge of doing.
Cristobal's laughable resume speaks for itself. 27-47 at FIU. Allegedly didn't even want the one player most responsible for that program's two-year period of slightly above .500 "success" (T.Y. Hilton) coming out of high school. Bolted on Miami after a few weeks to take a lateral position poaching South Florida recruits for Bama. The admin still holds a grudge against Butch Davis for heading to the NFL, but is willing to embrace Cristobal coming back? Not to mention that the OL he's coaching at Alabama is underperforming and their fans want him out the door. Not good enough for FIU, but good enough for Miami?
Coley staying would be just as much of a slap to the face as hiring Cristobal over the likes of Tom Herman, Justin Fuente, Butch Davis, and countless other candidates far more deserving of consideration. His ineptitude has been overshadowed by Golden and D'Onofrio. Our running game, red zone offense, third down percentage, and route trees are embarrassingly unacceptable. Our offense is broken and is in desperate need of a complete overhaul.
As for Tucker, he has the distinct title of being the worst defensive coordinator in the storied history of the Chicago Bears. The two worst seasons in that franchise's history in terms of points allowed occurred during Tucker's two-year tenure as their DC from 2013-2014. They were ranked 30th in total defense both years.
How on earth, with the program in desperate need of a culture change following three consecutive program-crippling hires, is this the HC/OC/DC combination this admin supposedly covets? After they reportedly burned between $4 million and $7 million to fire Golden during the season and are apparently willing to spend around $4 million per year on the next coach? Especially when there are several appealing candidates available such as Herman, Butch, and Fuente among many others.
This can't just be incompetence of the highest order. It comes off as deliberate sabotage of a once-proud program from an administration more concerned with etiquette dinners and cashing guaranteed ACC checks than vying for greatness. Disgraceful.
