It's sustainable because of a combination of a head coach who will retire here and the South Fl. talent pool. The administration had to really go out of its way to mess it up the first time(Coker,Shannon). Golden was an honest mistake. On paper he was a viable candidate from a resume standpoint, there was a national search with other candidates considered. We are going to lose Diaz and will have to fight off bidding wars for Kool but the head coach is the key. He has stature and other good candidates will want to coach with him. Yes it's sustainable

Great post.

If we lose Diaz I think Kool is the obvious choice for DC. If Richt retires, I imagine Diaz would jump at the opportunity to come back for that spot. Honestly it would be good for him to have a couple years of HC experience before taking over. The question is, who would run the offense? Hopefully somebody with some playcalling experience with south FL speed.

I think, all of that depends on Richt ... if he settles with how far we go this year, then that's going to be the high water mark of his reign.

OP got my first ever down vote, hoping I never had to use that... smh

As long as Richt or a competent replacement is coaching here very possible to have sustained success at the U.
Also highly possible O P is a croc or free shoes fan

Why 'band' the guy? Every time he posted the same salty crap we won. I am a little superstitious. Let him continue to post.

UM falls apart when they stray away from the South FL formula, and try to cash the brand in too much nationally. This staff doesn't appear too likely to fall down that rabbit hole. They are making offers local first and shooting for out of state difference makers.

I thought you were referring to THIS season which IMO is the more relevant question. I don't think we have played a legit top 15 team except VT. The game on Friday is no gimme especially if the temps are the expected 44 high.. UVA showed how to do it against us. Run on first down get a couple. Run for a couple more or throw short pass for a couple on second and then quick pass on 3rd. Manny gives that especially first half. Don't let out DL beat you with sacks or on outside running plays. Very good game plan I was impressed. That said our competition and playing atmospheres go to a completely new level starting this week. I'm not sure we can win another game until the Bowl. I will be there regardless.

Shut up man.

Virginia sucks balls.

You guys never had a chance

As a cowboy fan I look at what they have become this year and wonder if the canes are a one year wonder or can we keep this up. Many breaks this year, next year we will have a x on our back.

Lost me@ cowboy fan

Get that roster to 85 guys that want to be Canes and its rock and roll. Playing with 69 has hurt us this year especially on ST.

We've got a window of 5ish years to win some NCs, after that teams tend to fall apart a bit (I'm looking at you fsu). This is in no way certain, just a thing that seems to happen to many teams. If Richt/next coach stay on top of coaching changes and keep recruiting hungry guys it can go on indefinitely, but that turns out to be very difficult to pull off.

Whatever the case, this team should get real scary in the next few years. Enjoy.

Wasn’t our first run of being in the hunt for a national title 11 years (1983-1994)? We only got sidetracked with the sanctions. I think we could be consistently in the hunt with the right coach. Richt has a solid 10-15 years left.

Can we win some titles before questioning sustainability? Talk about looking ahead!

It sure was, but it took the rest of college football that long to catch on to the formula and emulate it. In those days, any decent coach could win like that because of the talent advantage we had. The top teams are full of big fast SFLA kids these days, so some of that advantage is gone.

I'm not saying we can't do 10+ years at the top, I'm just saying it's rare these days. I would like to see us capitalize in the next few years because sustaining top performance is tough. Strike while the iron's hot, then worry about how long we can sustain.

It's not about going outside SFLA, it's about properly evaluating the talent outside SFLA. Some of it has to do with distance, and some is about laziness. It's hard for coaches to maintain the intensity and sharpness once they've reached the top, and kids are even worse. You get real talented kids coming in who only work 95% as hard as the ones who put you on top, and sometimes that's the difference. fsu is still full of SFLA talent, but those guys are soft as fck. The hunger isn't there this year, we'll see if jimbo can get it back.

Not sure what level you are talking about. We had to be very fortunate to win 2 games and we have played lousy our last 2. Beating Clemson would be moving up several levels but the line is 10 and rising. Don't get ahead of yourself is my advice
