I've been doing a lot of thinking about this. I'm a bit of a football historian, and much more importantly, I'm a scholarly level ****-talker. So I like to know my facts, and then I like to use them to stomp our little brothers into the core of the Earth.
So I've been thinking. In modern history (let's go the last 45 years...back to 1980), is this the furthest ahead ANY of the Big 3 programs have been over BOTH of the other Little 2? To be clear, what I mean is, obviously over the past 45 years, we've all had our ups and downs. There are many instances of all 3 programs being good, and also 2 of the 3 being good while the other is down. But has there ever been a situation where 1 is THIS FAR ahead of BOTH of the other 2? Let's take a peek.
I did this as simply as I could, and it's not perfect (because it counts bowl games and I think bowl games are kinda meaningless, especially lately), but I think it tells a good story.
So let's run through history. Obviously in the 80's, Miami was incredible (3 National Championships), but FSU was also very good, especially in the late 80s. They won 11 games in 1987, and that started a run of 14 straight seasons where they won double-digit games (1987 through 2000). However, Miami was great in the late 80s and early 90s as well, and then in the mid 90s, Miami fell off, but the gator rose, winning a Natty in 1996, and having 12 seasons of their own where they won at least 9 games (1990 through 2001). So we can argue who was "best" until 2000, but either way, all 3 programs were close.
As the 2000s developed, the gator became the best program, but FSU still averaged 8.4 wins per season from 2001 to 2010. UiF averaged 9.8, and Miami was at 8.8. Since the gator won natties in 2006 and 2008, they were the best program during that timeframe, but again, Miami and FSU weren't overly awful. There was a gap, but it wasn't massive.
Into the 2010's, Jimbo's Noles became the best program in the state, winning a Natty in 2013, but again, the gap wasn't gigantic. From 2011 to 2020, FSU averaged 8.9 wins per year, the gator averaged 8.1, and Miami was at 7.6.
So again, ups and downs, but no matter what, over the past 45 years, if one team was great, another was at least decent. The gap between 1 & 2 was somewhat close, even if #3 was lagging behind.
Until now. I took 2 year totals for all 3 programs, and here's what I found:
FOR 2024 AND 2025, MIAMI WON 23 GAMES, WHILE FLORIDA AND FLORIDA STATE COMBINED TO WIN 19. That means, if you take Miami's wins, and subtract the combined wins of BOTH other schools, you get a total of +4.
IN THE LAST 45 YEARS, AT NO POINT DID ONE PROGRAM HAVE 4 OR MORE WINS THAN BOTH OF THE OTHER 2 SCHOOLS IN A 2 YEAR PERIOD. NEVER. NOT ONCE.
As a matter of fact, the only time one school even had more wins than the other 2 combined was 2013/2014, when FSU had 27 wins, and Miami/UiF combined for 26.
Here are the most "dominant" 2-year periods for all schools over the past 45 years:
1. Miami 2024/2025 23 wins, UiF/FSU 19 wins (4 game difference)
2. FSU 2013/2014 27 wins, UiF/Miami 26 wins (1 game difference)
3. FSU 2022/2023 23 wins, UiF/Miami 23 wins (0 game difference)
4. UiF 2018/2019 21 wins, Miami/FSU 24 wins (-3 game difference)
So there you have it, boys and girls. The gap has NEVER been wider. Ever. One school has never been better than BOTH of the other 2 at the same time like Miami has over the past 2 years.
Suck it, little brothers. You're in ******* ****. And you ain't getting out anytime soon.
