Al Golden ruined what could have been (at minimum) a very solid HC career by:
1) Hiring NoD as the DC & remaining loyal to NoD until the bitter end (this was an incredibly stupid career move on Al's part). I admire his loyalty to a friend but from a business standpoint it was clearly a disastrous blunder
2) Running a passive defensive scheme that was completely wrong for the U (and had caused Al Groh to fail pretty much everywhere in his career also)
3) Trying his way instead of following a blueprint (especially on D) that had worked for over 30 years
4) Failing to really understand Miami & embrace Miami
5) Trying to bail at every opportunity (especially to PSU). Yes, he was dealt a rough hand with the sanctions but he was also handed the keys to an elite CFB program (at least from the 1980s onwards)
6) Alienating HS coaches in Miami
His offenses weren't that bad. Having Duke Johnson helped him a lot on O. There were talented TEs and WRs also. It was mostly the Defensive scheme (and coaching) and alienating local HS coaches/recruiting that were his downfall.
