Invest in the band

Actually you're wrong. in the 80's the band was twice as big as it is now, but the school gave partial scholarships to kids who marched. The money made it worthwhile, and when the school stopped doing it, the kids stopped marching. It's a huge investment in time and effort, and the school should definitely do something for the kids. If you want to invest in the gamely experience, don't cheap out. Miami has 11,000 students, and I'm sure we could get 250-300 in a band if we gave them incentive to do it.
Let's get Mr. Get-It-Done (Ruiz) involved and stop making excuses about why something can't be done. Just do it! :stormwarningflag-sm::neonu:

The school is already putting money into football why not the band ? I counted the band and we had roughly 80 people playing musical instruments .I know most people don’t give a **** about the band but it’s a slap in the face when the away teams bring a 300 person band and blow them out of the water .

I wouldn mind seeing a little circa 90s canes music thumping at a night game while the band dons glow sticks in formation wandering about hard rock with the lights off. Everyone in the band marching with vicks vapo sticks up their nose. The other band would be jealous as fvck while the old timers sit back in nostalgia. Commence the a$$ whooping 2nd half.

Man!!! Why y’all on The Band of The Hours case? Leave them kids alone. It’s finally football season and you cats are bittcjing about the band!! Come on now!!
Agreed, those kids are NOT on Band schollys. Like some other schools. Some, however, are probably on some Music schollys or aid. UM Music dept used to be first class, don’t know about now. But, give these poor ******** a break. It’s hot as *** on the field and they’re marching and playing in full dress Uni’s. No, the Band of the Hour is good. And Cane to Cane, We don’t have to **** on them either.

They honestly should just add the high school bands weekly from different schools in dade and broward to their numbers and learn the additional songs those high school bands play. For example like one week use MNW AND CENTRALS Band...the next NORLAND and CAROL CITY...Working there way through the county.

My high school band is 100 percent better than ums and we are middle of the road or below avg in football but that band director keeps it lit.

To me it helps community involvement etc and shows they are a part of being THE university of SOUTH FLORIDA. **** might get some enrollment from some of those kids who enjoy that experience at UM.
Good shout. Agree on the community connection. Today’s participants, Tomorrow’s fans, etc. Was thinking how I would see plenty of smallish HS bands from NOLA, Memphis, etc., during Carnival every year that would wipe their **** with the BOTH. Let’s do the 7th Ward a solid & fly in the Marching 100 from St Aug. Those kids put in the work.

The other idea would be to just give up on having a “regular” band & let the BOTH become something more similar to Stanford & Rice, though (hopefully)less dorky & have them just troll the opposing fans.

******* Adidas and the band uniforms…. Jordan Brand or bust…

@Rellyrell

I also want your thesis on the impact of bands on PAC-12 football, and how said bands at Ruiz World would play to our advantage. 😎

If no one cares about the band, they’ll **** sure get engaged about the stadium and uniforms.

Disband the band.
Sell their equipment.
Use the money to hire a nutritionist and a pilates instructor for the cheerleaders.
Bring them to more recruiting events.
Profit.

Okay, so, *** the PAC-12.. you’re correct. If y’all don’t care about the band and only about football the the rest is just window dressing no one really gives a **** about, just chatter on the threads to bust balls. Side bar,.. In the early 70,s the Band was better than the Team😹🙌🏽

Okay longer short version:

1. Miami is smaller than most universities with 300 member bands.

2. UM's music school has nothing to do with the marching band, and most music majors have no interest in marching or football for that matter.

3. The band was/is funded through an athletic line item. No idea if it's going to get better with our new cash flow, but with the band being under athletics, it was the last thing on anyone's mind, budget-wise.

4. UM is not a music education degree-driven music program. A lot of huge state bands have literally hundreds of music Ed majors for whom marching band will literally be part of their career, so more incentive to march and stay. That's not the case at Miami.

5. The BOTH has had a major identity crisis for as long as I can remember. It's not big enough or dark enough to be FAMU, it's not big enough or square enough to be FSU or Ohio State. They've gone through directors, all great people, but each with a different vision for what the BOTH should be.

6. When I was at UM, even with scholarships, and even with allowing MDCC and FIU kids to march (before FIU had a football team), the band still struggled to break 150 members. There just aren't enough interested bodies. The same reasons UM doesn't sell out every home game are the reasons the BOTH is perpetually tiny.

More later after drinks.
What do you think of the idea of adding the high school bands to the numbers weekly at home hames?. Thus probably being able to break the 100-150 mark and enhancing community involvement.

You don’t know the current students now. They don’t have an interest in the band. It just won’t be a thing here.

They do/did a Band Day for one game a year and it was always cool seeing a couple hundred local kids join the BOTH, but you can't do that for every game when they have to practice 3-4 days/week all fall long and have 2-3 different shows a season. HS bands have their own season and schedule and shows to do. (Like having top football recruits play all our games with us the day after their own games lol)
