Invest in the band

Glad they may be improving the light shows. Hard Rock has all this cool **** with the lasers and we get basically nothing until 2 mins during the 4th quarter - sometimes.
 
I’m all for boosting up the pregame stuff, but they have to go back to realizing the focal point is the smoke. All the other stuff is whatever. The flame towers and stuff do nothing in my opinion, but I’m a geezer.

They need to bring back the inflatable helmet and that little tunnel. The players used to start rocking that before they ran out and it would send the crowd into a frenzy.

Back in the day you made sure you were at your seats when the players ran through the smoke. That’s been lost a bit over the years.

They need to increase the band by 50 percent, and then cut the size of the band area in half. It looks so mickey mouse to have so many empty seats around them, especially for a big game when the stadium is otherwise packed. At big state schools, the bands are huge and crammed in like sardines.

No way they had 100 band members last year. Looked closer to 60, maybe 70. So great, you're now at 100, 110 for this coming season. Get to 175, 200...that would be an improvement.
 
UM’s School of Music is top notch. Increasing band membership means funding endowed scholarships & making it a priority to raise necessary funds. Syracuse is a small school too & usually fields 200-250 band members...just look at how others do it and create a plan. Put someone in charge who can make it happen. Good bands are a big part of the college football experience and bring more people into the stadium. It’s not rocket science.

BTW....please forget the inflatable helmet....too cheesy. Even WVU was doing it.

got me curious.. largest undergrad population in the ACC = Cal.. odd. Stanford is at 7k.. what a dopey add to the conference..

The conference doesnt understand the new age business of CFB. Thats why B1G and ESPN was able to run laps around them a decade ago..

Notre Dame’s band is the size band we should be aiming for. Another smaller private school that needs to puff its chest because it plays big boy football. Theirs is over double what we have. If they can do it, so can we.

I had a buddy who didn't even go to UM play for the band. He was at Miami-Dade college and was in the band. Assuming because they don't have enough students who want to be in it.
 
At freshmen orientation, the band played at Watsco as they always do. They had 13 tubas which is 5 more than they usually have. My guess is the administration realized we looked like a high school band when compared to the 4 teams we played in the CFP. I'm all for the expansion of the Band of the Hour.

It’s not their song… LSU only plays it because they’ve heard Southern play it.

But LSU has been playing it for a while.

It’s their song in the sense that you’ll never get anything catchier or more crowd pleasing than “suck that tiger ****, *****!”, when playing it.

This is true. I was in the band way back win and we had a sizeable number of kids in there that weren’t UM students. It was the only way to fill the numbers out. There’s a reason why bands are so much bigger at other schools because they’re double and triple the size of UM as far as student population on campus.
 
I wonder if performance majors are now required to participate in either marching band or pep band, as is the case at most smaller private schools(a ton of state schools require participation as well) . That would do a ton to boost the numbers of both bands. When I was on campus, that wasn't a requirement and you saw that many performance majors avoided participating unless they wanted to. Marching band takes up a ton of time and to be honest, when you look at our student demographics, it doesn't take a genius to understand why the University of Miami doesn't march like an HBCU(or a large state school). We will never fund enough scholarships to enlarge the BOTH to state school levels. Keep in mind, schools like Notre Dame have donors that fund marching band scholarships, enough to where the department can actively recruit talented musicians, just so they can march.

I'll never understand why our fans consistently harp on stuff like this, it's almost like a lot of our fans desperately want the University of Miami to be something that it was never designed to be. We aren't LSU, we aren't a state school and we will NEVER be that way. What I want to see from the BOTH is a significant improvement in regards to musicianship and numbers(If feasible). There's nothing wrong with the BOTH playing modern popular music, I don't need them to be something they aren't.

Let's keep it a buck, the schools that try to bite the HBCU show style, but aren't HBCUs are lame. Don't try to be Southern U, when you have historically done everything in your power to deny that institution their rightful funding and support(Looking at you, LSU).
