Interesting tackling numbers

Per the great @dgould151 on Twitter, PFF has Miami as the 117th best tackling team in the country. That number was 128th last year.

HOWEVER

When looking at the individual grades…..

4 of the top 5 graded tacklers are transfers.

9 of the bottom 10 graded tacklers are returning players.

Hmmmmmmmmm. Maybe the staff didn’t completely forget how to coach? Maybe people like @Brooklyndee may have been onto something when they tried to tell you that breaking the horrible habits which have been coached into these kids takes time? And establishing new techniques and new culture takes time? Let this man work.

It's okay to recognize this team was not good and that even those of us that thought 9-3 was "realistic" were dead wrong.

It's also okay to recognize this team should not have lost to MTSU and Duke.

My biggest concern moving forward will be Mario's ability to coach this team to the point where 10 wins becomes the standard. Cormani gives us some renewed hope and reminds us that the path to success is through Mario's ability to not just recruit well...but to recruit at an ELITE level.

But I also understand that we're only halfway through the season. There is a very real scenario that sees us losing to UVA, FSU, Clemson, and Pitt. A 4-8 season is a very tough pill to swallow and likely leads to continued concerns about this staffs ability to coach.

But an elite recruiting class would certainly keep some of the "mopers" at bay.
 
our safeties IMO are the biggest let down coming off of last year... all 3 were HIGHLY ranked and showed FR flashes of being future studs... All 3 have had major Sophomore slumps... praying they put it together and become the studs we thought they were!!

Facts. I was just about to say this. I knew it was the case on O.... but according to the this, it's the case on both sides of the ball.

Good post but it's also very real we lose to GT. We shouldn't, but we've lost to MTSU and Duke at home. Unfortunately, there are no gimmes on the schedule, including GT.

Kinchens fall off has been surprising but JW is still having the same tackle issues he had last year.

First of all, I agree with everything you posted. But follow me for a couple minute and tell me honestly if you think I'm looking at this thing sideways...

If I tell you that I honestly believe half the HS coaches on CIS should have technically been able to show up the week of game prep and beat MTSU and (to a lesser extent because of the injuries) Duke at home with the talent advantage on UM's roster, would you agree with that? And if you agree with that, do you think that means our coaches aren't as good as half the HS coaches on CIS, or that there is something else seriously and significantly wrong with this team beyond just coaching? For me, the more I watch us play, the more I am starting to believe it's the latter.

I am too young for dementia to be setting in, but I'm also old enough to remember when UM won a national championship with Butch's savages basically coaching themselves while Coker walked around the sidelines like a geriatric cheerleader. That team was all-world talented, sure. But that NC team was also self-driven to compete, put in the hard work, and would rather die fighting to win than take an L. These guys not only take an L, but then post their stats on social media and then hit up the club to party like nothing happened. On a nice day, even setting talent and athleticism aside, I'd say maybe 2/3 of this roster doesn't have a drop of what those players had.

None of that changes stupid play calls where Steele has us vacate the middle of the field for 15 yards in every direction on a 3rd and 13, or passing when we should be burning clock, or running the ball straight into the weakest part of our OL 3 straight plays when we should be in hurry up, or calling some maddening timeouts, or using too many bunch formations and slow-developing routes. That's all real and needs to be addressed for us to win big. But shouldn't we still be able to win small despite those deficiencies?

Nah, nah, nah, Cuddy; this don’t fit the narrative that we got talent & Mario is a corch.

It’s like not we don’t have now, what, 4 yrs of complete data showing that the transfer players have been the best players.

All that emphasis on tackling! It's really showing!

Well, for one he’s always been the biggest kid on the field, so those bad techniques have been w/ him since HS. Some players love the highlight hits vs. fundamental tackling. He’s constantly trying to drive his shoulders in to players & on this level, that’s nit going to cut it.

Couple that w/ a year of bad techniques added from the previous staff, & voila.

If you can’t tackle, block, or catch, then you can lose to anybody. Including Middle Tennessee and Duke
