In addition to his time with Mario, Cooper Petagna was at Michigan in the recruiting department. He commented about how Michigan got ahead of themselves recruiting 5 stars who they weren't going to get. They made a course correction and instead of focusing on the high ceiling guys they moved to raise the floor. They started going after solid prospects- many of whom became valuable contributers. He mentioned Hasan Haskins and Luke Schoonmaker among many others. They've been key pieces the last few years. Hopefully some of our 3 stars will fill those roles.

One area where I disagreed with him though is when he said Ohio State is dramatically more talented than Michigan. Not sure how you can believe that after watching the last two match ups where Michigan just took it to them. I dont care how many 5 stars they have- they were obviously pretty overrated in HS. Michigan has had real difference makers the past few years- Hutchison, Ojablo, the oline, etc that Ohio State doesnt.

It's player development and system as well. I think Day is way overrated. Harbaugh has been successful at the highest level of football. It's taken him longer than I thought, but he is a top tier coach and he is proving that now. He's like a mid-west Steve Spurier. Not the best recruiter, but good at the X' and O's and his success recruits for his program.

OSU has 1 loss, the best WR in college even after the best WR in college (also on their team) got injured for the year...a Heisman finalist at QB, an all-conference caliber RB that got injured...and we're really sitting here saying they don't have difference makers and were over rated? Can't be serious here. OSU DLineman haven't popped off in the last couple years is their biggest issue.

It would be one thing if they decided to shift from the five star because they thought the lower ceiling higher floor guy would out produce them (which is possible) but this statement just says they weren't confident in landing the 5 star guys and we know that's not how Mario operates.

OSU is way more talented than Michigan.

Michigan played two matchups with almost mistake-free football. OSU plays without their best and the best WR in the country in Smith-Njigba (he is the best, debate your momma) and still had a shot to win.

CFB/NFL continues, although it's waining, of the singular "saviour" of the program worship. Both in coaching and players.

Certainly their are exceptional generational talents, however, they are almost always enabled by their surrounding cast.

The gap isn't nearly as wide to what people believe between "exceptional elite" and "pretty **** good".

Over a length of time, a team sprinkled with these supposed A+ types with larger drop offs surrounding them simply won't outperform one whose is structured and backfilled throughout with A-/B+ members.

Miami's optimistic look (turning a corner in say 2024) is not because of any single recruit this cycle, but the synergy the collection of them are expected to develop into. Very encouraging that our Canes are allegedly securing the "best" 2023 OL class, but it still isn't near enough as they'll need to repeat it (for other position groups too) for 2024, 2025, and so on.

Cristobal gives me the vibe he gets this and I for one hope he gets them before patience runs out in say, 2025/2026.

Go Canes!

I’d say OSU has more NFL players on their roster than Michigan does. But…they don’t matchup well against the Wolverines because they’re lacking on the front 7. They have to sell out to stop the run and Michigan was able to capitalize with huge pass plays over the top.

OSU is loaded...but those kids do not like getting punched in the mouth.

Michigan did it and won. ND and PSU did it but just didnt have quite enough in the end or they could have pulled it off.

OSU better go to the wizard and get some toughness because if they think Michigan was tough wait til that UGA def lines up across from them after 2-3 weeks hearing how great OSU's skill players are...

Great point about the A-,B+ types. For all their 5 stars, 1/3rd of Georgia’s starting lineup is 3 Stars including at some important positions like QB.

There’s been much debate about the subject of coaching versus Jimmie’s and joes. I believe it’s a combination of both. I don’t think a team can reach the pinnacle without talented players but those players must be coached up and put in positions to succeed.
