Interesting Note on the Run Game (and Praise for Zach Carpenter)

I know people want to take away the 91 yard run (and I am concerned about the tight line splits also), but there are different ways to run the ball. As much as I would love to get 6 yards a carry (like Emmitt Smith), you can also work away for short gains and then break a big one (like Barry Sanders). No I am not comparing our running back room to those guys, but there are different ways to construct 150 rushing yards.

Yes it feels like junk time, but it also could happen when we are 30 - 27 up in the 4th later in the year.

if you remove lyle's 91 yard run garbage time run we averaged 2 yards per carry... they may not be letting people in backfield for TFLs but they aren't opening holes either.
Miami had 188 yards rushing vs USF on Saturday on 29 carries.

188 yards - 91 yards (Lyle's run) = 97 yards on 28 carries. That's 3.46 yards per carry.

It’s actually 3.46 yards per carry. Not great, but also almost double what you said. Stop the cap.
Also, a couple carries were at the goal line which skews the numbers a tad too. You know, math.
Lastly, do the RBs get to share any blame at all? Or just blame the OL for no holes but credit the RB for a great run?
If my aunt had balls she’d be my uncle.

8 guys in the box? No problem. Screens, deep digs, and shot plays against 1:1 coverage.

I’d love to see the breakdown/success percentage for runs against 5/6 in the box…
I’d like to know how many snaps we’ve seen all year with only 5/6 in the box. My guess is you can count them on one hand.

If you remove Martinez’s 3 TDs he didn’t have any.

If you remove Lyle's record breaking (yes, that is a new school record) 91 yard run, he doesn't have any and the record stands at 90 yards.

If you remove Brown’s 76 yard TD, he didn’t have any either and Cam would’ve only thrown 3 TDs.

If you remove my uncle's balls, (s)he becomes my aunt.

All of these things happened. And the best part? They ******* count too! The score reflects that fact.

This is such a dumb argument in this situation. It’s one thing if we won the game 28-27 with Lyle's TD saving us. It's a whole other argument when we're blowing the doors off of teams. We're not a run heavy/run only team like Army or B1G team. We've shown just last year that if we NEED to run the ball (Clemson) we can and will.

The best part about this? We haven't needed to because we have the best QB in college football slangin that ****. Killa Cam is dealing.

So lock that BS up and save it until you need it.
If you remove porsting from Fraggle, he becomes Lance Roffers, Cribby, or Memnon.

Dare I say he might even become The Original Cane or even The Empirical One.

The vast majority of our non-short situation runs are inside. When we need 2 yards we get it. I think Lyle's run was not garbage. USF had it's "stout" run defense in the game and got beat to the edge. At that point speed was obvious. I would like to see some toss sweeps, jet sweeps and perhaps a few read option runs. But, when the air raid is working, why take your foot off the gas?

This is the part that everybody who has been saying this has been missing. If we hgad been getting stuffed in these situations it becomes somewhat more valid. However, every short yardage situation where we've needed a couple to a few yards for a 1st or TD we've gotten. We're getting and taking what we need and leaving the rest to Cam and our receivers.
Yep big difference from Mario's first year it was a struggle on 3rd and 1.

Carpenter is physical as **** in the run game. Ive noted pancakes a few times with the guy.

Lee might have been overall better and getting to the next level with athleticism but Carpenter punishes guys when he is locked on.
Agreed. And, I’ll add - there has been no noticeable drop off since Lee. Did Lee make an NFL roster.

1. If we had run into those boxes it would have been malpractice. There were points where there were 10 defenders within 10 yards of the LOS

2. You don’t get to subtract the long runs and say “yeah, but!” It’s part of the game. You don’t get to subtract a hitters XBH in baseball and say “well if he didn’t hit that HR he would have gone 0-3.”

3. We are efficient on 3rd down and RZ in the run game

4. Cam Ward is about to re-write the record books through the air. Let him cut teams up if they want to stack the box

Our quick passing game has replaced the need to run. Vs USF, if we didn't gain anything on 1st down, Dawson used screens and quick comebacks to gain 5-7 yards and make it 3rd and manageable.

This is where Horton has been the most effective imo. He's the go to WR when we need yards on 2nd down to set up 3rd

If you take away 5% of Barry Sanders’ carries in his career he would appear to be average as well.

If you give me an option of averaging 3 yards a pop with a 91 yarder mixed in I’ll take that every day.

Saw this stat, it's very eye opening. Basically we don't need to run the ball, but in the few cases we do... short yardage, goal line situations, we've been successful at the highest rate in the country. Nothing else to be said.

I'm stoked for this kid. We were all worried he might be the weakest link on the line, but against florida and that bohemeth of a DLineman, I watched that dude engage and never let up nor give up a foot. Immediately settled my worry.
