As someone who has criticized the run game as recently as last week, I rewatched USF and realized how little push teams are getting into the backfield on runs. In fact, I thought, we almost never give up a TFL, which is a testament to the blocking ability and chemistry of the OL. These stats were eye popping to me.

if you remove lyle's 91 yard run garbage time run we averaged 2 yards per carry... they may not be letting people in backfield for TFLs but they aren't opening holes either.
As a fan that likes to analyze as a hobby, I think it's something that may bite us in the *** if we don't get this run game going. IMO you put Lyle or Chis Johnson back there after Martinez runs his fair share of carries.

Teams are stacking the box. So far this year, Miami is running the ball just to keep them honest. If we get a big gainer, wonderful. Don't care about 2 yards per carry if they are getting 10 yards per pass.

Think about when Miami is 3rd and 8. Are you worried? It's almost automatic with Ward.

There will be a game or two when Ward is off and air yards are harder to come by. Miami is built to grind as well, with big physical OL and a literal stable of backs. Every team so far has been toast in the second half.

Not sure if you were at the game, but like others they had 8 guys within a few yards of the LOS seemingly all night. Hence the reason we’ve been so pass heavy.

It will be interesting to see what opponents approach will be moving forward but I don’t think they have a good choice with what we have to work with. USF clearly chose an approach and it didn’t work.

While the ground game “early” hasn’t been what we’d like… we’ve taken what they’ve given us. People have have to pick their poison with us and so far everyone has made up their minds “They are not going run the ball on us and we’re going to make their QB beat us…”

Ok well let’s keep seeing how that works out for everyone?

if these teams ever stop stacking the box it will be interesting to see what type of holes get open. There really should be big time holes running through the right side. What is interesting is we don’t get stopped on short yardage. On all three Martinez TD’s last game, I remember thinking before the snap we did not have a chance. It was combination of being out numbered and PTSD from years past of getting blown up in that situation. Yet he easily scored on all three. And to top it off Cam was telling them where we would run on two of those. So it might not be pretty but this run blocking is getting it done in critical moments.

I mean opposing defenses haven’t been giving us a reason too. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Teams literally can’t stop out passing attack, so I don’t understand why people are annoyed we haven’t been reliant on the run game. Everyone on this board knows we have a top 5 rb room in the country, and that it can be extremely dangerous if we decide to open up the run game playbook and become reliant on it

Yes. With Cam at QB, teams have to pick their poison.

If you remove Martinez’s 3 TDs he didn’t have any.

If you remove Lyle's record breaking (yes, that is a new school record) 91 yard run, he doesn't have any and the record stands at 90 yards.

If you remove Brown’s 76 yard TD, he didn’t have any either and Cam would’ve only thrown 3 TDs.

If you remove my uncle's balls, (s)he becomes my aunt.

All of these things happened. And the best part? They ******* count too! The score reflects that fact.

This is such a dumb argument in this situation. It’s one thing if we won the game 28-27 with Lyle's TD saving us. It's a whole other argument when we're blowing the doors off of teams. We're not a run heavy/run only team like Army or B1G team. We've shown just last year that if we NEED to run the ball (Clemson) we can and will.

The best part about this? We haven't needed to because we have the best QB in college football slangin that ****. Killa Cam is dealing.

So lock that BS up and save it until you need it.

Saw this stat, it's very eye opening. Basically we don't need to run the ball, but in the few cases we do... short yardage, goal line situations, we've been successful at the highest rate in the country. Nothing else to be said.
This is the part that everybody who has been saying this has been missing. If we hgad been getting stuffed in these situations it becomes somewhat more valid. However, every short yardage situation where we've needed a couple to a few yards for a 1st or TD we've gotten. We're getting and taking what we need and leaving the rest to Cam and our receivers.
