We ran the ball on our 2nd drive 3x inside the 6 and scored. All 3 inside the guard runs.Sure, scheme is and issue, but when you’re running tight split duo up the middle for 0-2 yards every play, you are getting physically beaten. When you’re playing 4 down linemen and letting up 7.5 yards a carry to a running back, you are getting physically beaten.
Next drive we had a 1st down 6 yard run inside negated by an UC on Toney. Next play (inside run) went for 2 yards. Drive ended a couple plays later with a pick.
4th drive Lyle had a 12 yard run off tackle followed by a 1 yard run in the A gap. Drive ended a couple plays later with a pick
5th drive we followed up Toney’s 61 yard catch with a 0 yard A gap dive by Lyle inside the 10. Drive ended with a FG
5 drives where we ran the ball 7x for 19 yards. 4 of those were short yardage inside the 10 yard line. We bullied our way for that 1st TD on the ground with a 225 lb running back. First half it was all scheme. They knew we were running and they knew where we were running.
Second half we abandoned the run completely.
This game had nothing to do with being bullied at the LOS. You can’t block 7 with 5, especially when that 7 knows where it’s going. Same thing in the pass game. Once we became a 1 dimensional pass attack they were able to blitz, pin their ears back and get up field. We did nothing to keep Louisville honest. Think of how many times Louisville handed off in a quick hitter on obvious passing downs that got the first or most of it to set up a manageable 4th.
This was Brohm a great play caller vs Mario and Dawson who are still stuck in some mentality of look how hard we have to work to do simple things.
