For all of the bashing that Diaz and the defense has gotten on here lately (granted, some of it warranted), I think we also have to remember really how much pressure our offense put on our D. As fans, we sometimes look at these units as separate, but in reality in gametime, they are intertwined.

- We had an offense that for the life of them could not get a 3rd down and sustain or create an 8 to 12 play drive. Our D kept getting trotted out there constantly without a breather or momentum. You could tell that it caught up to them by the end of the season and in certain games.

- in order to get 3rd down conversions, you need a QB that is accurate, has timing, and can get to 2nd and 3rd reads....none of which Malik can do. Hopefully Perry or Williams has it.

- We do an absolutely AWFUL job on 3rd and short. I still cant figure this one out. Whether its the O-line just manning the f up and knowing we need a 1.5 yard push and getting it, or calling a different blocking scheme...these situations were complete drive killers in every game....again putting more pressure on the D and asking them to bail the team out.

- we had a punter that too many times took his part in creating bad field position...again, more for the D to have to deal with

All of these offensive (and special teams) problems put such an added responsibility on the D time and time again. If we can fix these problems on offense you immediately help out our defense next year before Diaz (hopefully) makes some adjustments.

It’s a CIS post-season tradition to pick a side of the ball to blame for our struggles. Dig those stilettos in, fellas.

Its a CIS all season long tradition for knucklehead responses like this. Some fans actually come to this site to read and talk football

I feel like we're in year 3 or 4 of the Shannon/Golden era's already.

Fcking Groundhog Day. Guys on here trying to blame the offense and the Punter and everyone else under the sun for our defense drinking from the **** pipe for large portions of this season.

Meanwhile, Thunderfoot Feagles looked like a Ray Guy finalist against Wisconsin, and we still managed to make another colostomy bag of a QB look like Tom Brady.

Did the offense let a true freshmans QB in his first start for a 4 win Pitt disaster slam us and run over us like a tank?

Our offense let journeyman Benkert start 19 for 19? Kelly Bryant, a basic passer, hit every throw he attempted in the first half and put us in an insurmountable hole?

Our defense was mediocre this year. And our offense and STs were poor for the most part. It’s a goddam miracle we won 10 games given the obvious foibles in all 3 phases.

The mother****ing backup QB for Bethune Cookman lit our *** up, as did the 3rd string QB for UNC.

Woodside, Dungey, Blackmon, Hornibrook, Pickett, Bryant, Benkert all tore our *** apart.

The defense ******* sucked bro.

You made a point the other day I frankly agree with at this point.

We needed a consistent guy to refloat the husk rusting on the bottom of the Castle Bravo crater after sucking for 15 years.

The **** we are seeing now is nothing new and it is concerning.

However we are in year two.

Come year 5 if nothing changing the Cuban airforce will be deployed.

Lets not forget the defense gave up the first 3 touchdowns on the first 3 drives by Clemson.

Agreed Chise. The Defense has to take their medicine and look in the mirror and get better too. I never said in my post that the defense was all world or immune to criticism. Ive seen enough posts on here just ing and crying about how bad the D is. Im actually trying to talk ways to improve it rather than complaining. The whole point here is that if we improve on a few of those areas of offense, that the D will be better before Diaz makes one adjustment...of which he needs too.

When I get mad about some of our defensive mishaps, I have flashbacks of Doritos defense and realize we are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better off.

We do not have the level of talent across the board yet to have that mindset that we have an elite defense.

The defense needs improvement, but it didn't "suck, bro" and I challenge any of you dudes with outlandish statements like that or "Diaz is now Dorito" to explain. Can't wait.

this.

there is nothing, and I mean nothing, that special teams or the offense did to make the defense gift hall of fame status to a bunch of JAG QB's.

these QB's made throws in all down and distance situations, on all parts of the field, and across different routes. it was not "one" thing, it was "everything."

our back seven blew monkey chunks for most of the season in pass defense. period.

You could also say if the defense could get a 3rd down stop it would give the offense a chance to get into a grove.

This defense is awesome on 1st and 2nd down. Just to turn around and have a team 3rd and 15 plus just pick up a 1st down like we love being on the field.

We live off the big play on both sides of the ball. If Malik can't hit a wr over the top. We can't sustain a
drive, or score when we get into the RZ.

If the defense can't get a turnover. The opposing offense just moves the ball down field on 3rd down.

They were pretty bad following the ND game. Pretty **** good before then. That's what I think.

This year we relied on our defense as it was our strength...

But what can you do when you lose 2 of your top offensive weapons on O all season and your 3rd most important weapon at the end when it was money time down the stretch

Oh and it didn’t help that our rosier was hot and cold

Our defense no where near elite. Our defense regressed badly in IMO. In the beginning of the year we were *** vs the pass to the point Bethune coaches who get paid like HS coaches were able to exploit our defense and scheme. Everyone of course shrugged that off but I'm sure people remember me saying that was a red flag off jump giving up 350 yards to them. Mid season everyone was able to run on us to the point a Syracuse RB who finished the year with a little over 400 yards ran for almost 200 on us. We played TWO good games defensively and then we went back to looking like how we looked when all those Toledo and Bethune WRs were running wide open on our defense.

We went from 20th to 40th ranked defense. That's almost the same kind of backwards jump Manny had at Texas. We did NOTHING well. Listen, when you gotta dig deep to find a stat that legitimize you as a quality defense then your not a top defense. I should be able to just look at the stats I look at for other defenses when I try to determine whether they are good or not and those stats are: Total yards per game, total rush and pass average given up per game, and point per game. When we breakdown our opponents we don't look for these other advance stats... we look at those 4 stats whether it offense or defense. Total, Rush, Pass, and Points. The only thing we did well defensively was red zone D and points per game but when your average in terms of yards given up then teams well eventually find ways to get in the end zone.

FAU, Illinois, Northwestern, Purdue, and Minnesota gave up less points against Wisconsin then we did.

We're starting to see teams figure out our defense and now our defense is starting to look like the defenses that got Manny canned from Texas. We can't maintain success with gimmicks (which is why I think we should retire the turnover chain). I guess the guy who said our defense was gimmicky looks like a genius now.

Another thing, people who are complaining about the offense against Wisconsin keep in mind they were the #1 ranked defense... Before the games if I said we'd score 24 points on them 99.9% of us would of thought we won the game because of how inept we thought that offense would be against our defense.

Exactly. We all know the offense had problems, but the defense had plenty of self-inflicted wounds.

We couldn't cover our own shoes this year. We had ****bag QB after ****bag QB light us up. Then, those same QBs would play a team with a pulse after us and get shut down.

Diaz got lit up at Miss State a few times just like he did this year. Take a look at that Arkansas game where Miss State couldn't stop Allen from completing any pass he felt like completing. I'm hoping we can recruit our way out of this, but I've had that hope before.

Right now, I'm going to be grateful for the 10 wins, the Coastal, the FSU win, and some **** great signees in the 2018 class. The rest of it? I'm just going into "hope mode."
