Insightful X post from RomanCane

I have some good news and some bad news for where things stand. The good news is that the ACC is the conference of quarterbacks: 11 of the top 50 passing yards leaders are ACC quarterbacks. 12 if we include ND (36th). Which brings me to the bad news: we still have to play ND and VT (17th) who are prolific thru the air; and a possible rematch with WF (15th) looms.

Duke is less troublesome imo. Semi-good news is that we’ve already gone against the 12th (Stanford), 15th, 22nd (FSU), and 33rd (UNC) which makes up half of our already played schedule. FAMU doesn’t tell us much; but did we allow Central Michigan to pass for 137 yards against us when they average 122; which is the 5th worst in the nation ahead of the three service academies & Jacurri Brown-led Rice Owls.

Bad News: 6 of our 7 FBS opponents threw for more passing yards than their average against us; including Pitt w/ their backups. We held Stanford to fewer than their usual; in our first game of the season.

Pitt’s true freshman backup went 3/3 w/ 1 TD and 68 passing yards against us.

Epic epic post and writeup. Loved reading that. Our DL personnel is just not great for the system right now, the guys we portaled in are good players but shined in different systems. A simple cover 1 base would IMO be a great alternative and enough of a changeup bc the look is the same but post snap is completely different to the QB.

You’re number 1 against the run and 10th in sacks. What you mean the defensive line is not a great fit for our system? You are 2 sacks from being in the top 6

Self scouting is as important as scouting opponents
i keep telling myself that he didn't make to this point without having counters ... he's the dc for the miami hurricanes ... national championship runner up ... he has to have an answer for this ..... right?

It’s much more difficult when this is only your 3rd year as a dc. Dawson made some tweaks after smu but he had been an oc multiple times at different spots for a decade plus

Awesome breakdown. I agree that the UNC game was a gift. It’s going to force this staff to make the necessary corrections instead of accepting the same issues we accepted in 2024.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned about Mario, it’s that he’s going to expect this defensive staff to fix these problems. If they can’t, I wouldn’t be surprised to see people let go after the season.

The biggest difference between this team and the 2024 team is that this roster actually has the talent to make the necessary adjustments. The pieces are there. The defensive staff just has to figure out how to put them in the best position to succeed.

This defense needs to find a way to get better the same way the offense did last season after the SMU game. There’s no reason this unit can’t make that kind of turnaround.

Instead of the delayed blitzes with our safeties constantly that rarely ever seem to get home, why doesn’t Heatherman blitz our lbs Toure and Smith ever? They both can’t cover and they seem like they would be good at blowing up the line and disrupting the qb. But he never does this. And that would put them out of covering their rbs and tight ends.
Agreed, it seemed like we blitzed the LBS more last year. I can recall Toure getting to Trinidad and Wes against taint to name a few.

As for the defense moving forward, I want to believe that the unc game set off enough alarms to tweak things.

Looking back at some of our earlier games.. against Wake, our defense actually did well considering what the Wake offense has been lately. I was more upset with our offense going 3 and out on 4 straight possessions, then the actual defense. When you look at the fsu game, the offense was sloppy early on with the weather and in the 3rd quarter with the int in the end zone and the two failed 4th down conversions, more than the D getting gashed. Robinson had less than 20 yards with 3 minutes to go, but Daniels and Robinson boosted their stats on the big sideline play and the overtime TD to the corner. The designed screens to the RB when we blitz are concerning because fsu and unc did it perfectly against us multiple times. The Clemson game was more of a bend but don't break approach (which has been a consistent theme in most of our games)

Lastly, the Pitt game was not as bad as the boxscore would indicate. They racked up most of their stats when we pulled everyone in the beginning of the 4th.

We'll know a lot more about what this defense is made of Saturday night because of the big game energy it will bring. Go Canes!

In other words, that sht ain’t getting fixed in one week.
I'm not certain Miami can fix "cover 6'-5"+ receiving threat"*.

FSU + UNC gave them fits, everyone else has been manageable.

Miami doesn't whiff on that sack (yes, a ton of what ifs throughout the game), and Canes possibly win by 2 scores.

Key question strategically Miami has to address:
- Willing to give a little on run D to focus more on middle of the field pass D?

*I believe we will see an elite 6'-5" DB one day soon

Great stuff by Roman.
The problem when he's with the boys is the guy who knows a lot spends the majority of the time listening to the ones who don't.
This. I only watch his YouTube stuff because he’s the only one on that podcast that knows a **** thing about football. The other dorks are just over emotional fans. No actual insight just reactionary “feelings”.

You need to give up some run D because it’s way to easy for an offense throwing the ball right now

I’d argue the passing game is as reliable for opposing offense as having a RB who is picking up 5-6 yards a run every carry and walking down the field. We have played some very below average QBs and have allowed them to put career numbers up

I know heatherman is scared of giving up the big play but allowing teams to play keep away and limit your own offense’s possessions is a recipe for a loss

We fixed our issues last year around this time. But they were on offense. This time it’s defense and it’s worse
this gives me hope ... we didnt really get this thing cranking last year until mid november ...
I generally think it’s easier to fix an offense with a great line, good receivers and an experienced qb than it is to fix a defense but we shall see
