Insightful X post from RomanCane

People comparing this to Guidry forget our secondary couldn't even figure out who was supposed to pick up a guy who went in motion. That was beyond terrible.

But this season has been bad. We sit on our couches and see them put a guy in motion giving them a 3 to 2 advantage on the outside and we don't do anything to adjust. We better hope we can outscore ND, cause Carr is going to pick us apart unless we figure something out quick.

Via Grok:
- UNC systematically attacked Miami’s preferred defensive looks—simulated pressures, Okie fronts, secondary cutting, and third-level blitzes—by isolating linebackers and ends with running backs, using H-back and bunch concepts, and shifting landmarks to disrupt split-field rules.
- The secondary’s aggressive undercutting and Miami’s heavy use of man coverage created openings for curls, stops, and intermediate throws, while certain fronts slowed the pass rush and allowed tight ends and backs free releases.
- Fixable items include personnel tweaks in Okie looks and fewer simulated pressures, yet consistent man coverage remains a limitation, so Miami needs a primary scheme plus a quick-change contingency for opponents who copy UNC’s plan.

Self scouting is as important as scouting opponents
I'd argue it's the most important.
Gotta know what your giving up to gain, of you do expect your opponents then you can catch em.

I don't get it. I think this is pretty simple. We never play match coverage, which is easy to disguise with our typical fronts and we have corners that are veterans, so they'll be able to read pass concepts.
Preach- it’s either stubbornness or lack of confidence. I hope it’s the latter

I mean what his saying Heatherman should have already had it.

Even when I coached a lower level I always asked myself "What's my counterpunch if they stop our base?" And every team is different.

RomanCane said we should ALREADY have it and he's 100 percent right, that's why I'm scratching my head a little harder considering it's been exploited twice now (at least).
TWICE?

We saw glimpses of exactly the quick-hitting concepts widening our zones against Stanford, WF really did it well, and then we’ve seen other teams try little bits and pieces to varying degrees of success.

The easiest way to explain is show the evidence of how multiple QBs (Clemson, FSU, UNC) looked in other games and how comfortable they were against us.

Really don’t understand.

For success - you got to be absolutely ruthless.

Be most ruthless on your own self - FIRST.

Game/scheme first with the best plan you can come up with.

Then, switch hats - what are you going to do to defeat that plan?

That's how you drop a big doo-doo in your opponent's dish when Plan A gets addressed - Plan B.

Your second paragraph is the most troubling.

Every QB and play caller we face seems to walk onto the field absurdly confident in their belief guys will be open all night long, and they won’t be under pressure if they get the ball out before the 3 second bell.

As the game progress, there is nothing that surprises them, it’s exactly what they saw on film. All night long. They can point and click in meetings, they can point and click on the field.

It’s the “Career High D” until proven otherwise. If Ashton Daniels can torch this defense, anyone on the freaking planet can get a career high.

All three of those guys had season highlight nights against us while looking pretty much mid the rest of the season. That's not good for us. We're just lucky we haven't run into a defense that can stop us enough for the recipe to out score us. Hopefully Heatherman can have an epiphany like Dawson did last year and stop being so predictable... or whatever it is that's allowing mid to work so well against our defense.

I'm no defensive guru but if QBs are releasing the ball in under 2.5 seconds:

- why are we sending a 3rd level blitz 6 years behind the line at the time of the snap?
- why are we not jamming at the line more? If the QB is expecting their read to be in a spot before the release and you can slightly delay that with a jam, the release time may tick up up giving our defensive line more time to be disruptive or get home.

I just hate the soft coverage that allows the wr to dictate the route
This is what I don’t understand is why our corners aren’t playing more press coverage at the line to throw off the timing

There was a play, I think on a slant maybe, in the 3rd-ish quarter and Lucas is up on the guy and if he just jams him the entire play gets blown up. The timing needed to be perfect. But he doesn't and everything stays on schedule. I'm not an expert but I'm watching him let the receiver step right by him with no resistance and just thinking, you gotta do something man. Guys can't just go get to their spot.

If you're playing an offense that is clearly in a rhythm because of being on schedule then do everything to get them off it. It's the same issue I had in 2024. If they're gonna score on every drive anyway then at least try SOMETHING different.

You guys just have to accept that UM are playing with major injuries.

We lost Jakobe Thomas and Keionte Scott to the NFL. Then OJ Frederique goes down in the first game and hasn’t returned. Xavier Lucas misses several weeks, Damari Brown has been dealing with injuries, and Ja’Boree Antoine has been out all season.

That’s six defensive backs who either left for the NFL or have dealt with injuries.

And here’s something else people seem to be overlooking. Bryce Fitzgerald was a Freshman All-American at safety last year, and we had to move him to cornerback just to help fill the holes. That meant putting a true freshman, JJ Dunnigan, at safety.

Think about that for a second. We’re moving an All-American away from his natural position and asking freshmen and backups to take on responsibilities they probably weren’t expected to have this early.

Now, I’m not saying Hetherman shouldn’t make adjustments. Of course he should. But I think there’s a difference between opposing coordinators figuring out your defensive scheme and your defense not having the personnel available to execute it the same way.

It could also explain why he's not having CB3 and CB4 playing bump and run as they will most likely give up the big play. So, he makes them take 12-15 play drives to get in the endzone. Higher chance for the offense to make a mistake, have a penalty, etc. Not a way to win a championship though. Can the Canes get to the playoffs till the cavalry returns?

We fixed our issues last year around this time. But they were on offense. This time it’s defense and it’s worse

last year there were porsters talking about our offensive predictability and lack of diversity before we took an L. Those porsters were mocked mercilessly because we won. Then we lost and then the noise started getting louder. The press asked about run diversity and it didn’t go over well with Mr Dawson. At some point we ran like 24-25 straight times up the middle in short yard situations. Then we looked like **** the first half vs Stanford and eventually wore them down. Then we lost again. Then We decided to let it rip. So within a 3-4 week period we went from you’re just idiot fans and dumb press to whoa we now we have to do something because we dropped 2 games. The ultimate irony is the offense that was getting predictable and stale became potent in the post season games. I doubt it had anything to do with us not being predictable.

My point is things can change but these guys are human and are slaves to their dogmatic beliefs. Last year it took 2 losses to make some changes that even people who never played could see were needed. Winning hides a lot of warts. Let’s hope that after 2 near misses it’s the wake up call. If anything, listen to one of the GOAT corches that said you did the same thing you have done all year… that alone should be enough to spark something

Tait Reynolds nearly reaching 300 passing yards against us is by far the most troubling

Another formerly minor, now MAJOR, problem with our pass defense is the lack of turnovers created

QB's have great days against us because there are 2 main ways of impacting the QB - changing to post snap alignment, causing confusion, and pressuring the QB, which we have been unable to do with just 4 DL. Regarding post snap, there are some examples of Miami going into an inverted Tampa Two but we're trying to do it with 9 and 1 who struggle to get back into coverage. Otherwise, we mostly remain static.
