In the simplest terms, why did it take so long for Miami to finally run a 21st century offense?

It was seen by old schoolers as a way for lesser talented teams trying to compete.
And it was. But it was just a better offensive system. It took years for it to be accepted.
Look how long it took the 3 pointer to be accepted by the nba. It was seen as a gimmick or “use in case of emergency” strategy.
Now the traditional nba center is a dinosaur.

Even dudes on here talk about that midget being the best college football coach of all time while forgetting that he went to cry to the ncaa about the fast tempo offense and how they should outlaw it cause it leads to injuries.

They forget how his brilliant defensive mind was getting gashed by running qb’s while he was still running a power run offense.

Even Former players were screaming for us to keep a pro set and not go “soft”.

Saban changed his offense finally when he got tua and the other receivers in that class.
Saban would never recruit a receiver as short as Leary or Wadle.

I expect alot of revisionist history.. hope like @Bird4um people atleast repent.. with the bye week would be entertaining to find those old threads and laugh *** off at NFLu bros hold on to something even nfl teams left behind..

Sounds like he smartened up and got with program.. sounds like a smart coach to me
 
We pretty much ran true pro style up through the Coker years. Shannon's OC's ran pro style. I think Whipple added a little variation. Golden's OC's pro style with some other variations. We ran pro style with lot of RPO packages during Richt's years.

Only couple successful offensive campaigns during those years and that was with Jedd Fisch as Golden's OC.

Majority of our fans, including myself, wanted to hang onto the pro style. After all, we were one of the first teams to use it at the college football level and find success. Stubbornness is the only reason I can think of why we got behind the times when most other teams started going spread or something other than pro style.
 
Cause our fans and administration have always been focused on the past. Since the pro-style won us a title 15+ years ago, it has to be the only way! (nobody ever thinks to themselves, well we had 11 NFL guys on that offense and 11 more in the 2-deep)

At some point we stopped being innovative and forward-thinking, which is crazy to me because that's exactly how we became a dynasty.
 
Because conservative coaches hire conservative coordinators. Every head coach the school has hired since Erickson left was hired for one reason. To keep the program out of trouble. The Pell Grant scandal and the out of control football program scared the administration. Butch, Coker, Randy, Golden, even Richt were hired because they had goody-goody reputations and they wouldn’t allow the inmates to run the asylum again. None of those guys were innovators or ground breaking coaches. They all pretty much ran systems they were familiar with or systems they played in. The old “it worked back in the day, it will work now” attitude a lot of people still have today. Howard, Jimmy and Dennis had success because they all did things their way. They were innovators. Schnellenberger’s pro style passing game was mind blowing 40 years ago when everyone was still running the wishbone. Jimmy Johnson installed a 4-3 over defense that emphasized speed over size and strength was visionary. Dennis Erickson’s one back, triple shoot offense was one of the precursors to the modern spread offense. Miami might have been the only national power using a 3 WR base offense. But creative types, innovators, can tend to be gamblers and risk takers. After the NCAA dropped sanctions in the 90’s, the school didn’t want risk takers. Now Butch Davis was able to amass such a great amount of talent, the early 2000’s teams didn’t need innovation. They just out talented everybody. But the talent levels eventually dropped off an the offense went into the toilet.

You have to remember a lot of the top flight HS players didn't want to play in an Air Raid-ish offense, they thought that playing in a PSO would better get them ready for the pros. But watching the MSU vs LSU game, it's funny that the announcers kept constantly repeating that Leach introduced the AR to the SEC in 2020, when it was actually Hal Mumme that was running the AR at UK in the late 90's with Leach on staff.
 
Improperly vetted bad hires along with the Shapiro scandal which cause the UM admin to install a pro-academic overly ethical athletics policy instead of a pro-winning policy (though both are not mutually exclusive).
