That's why I have been rooting against Alabama for years. I have no idea why anybody cares about Ohio State. Even if Ohio State won a second straight title this season they wouldn't be mentioned alongside the old Canes. Besides, you could tell the top Buckeye juniors would depart after this season.
It's just criminal that Alabama receives so many breaks, even ones that aren't obvious. They were excused a home loss again. It's become a tradition. Then they wouldn't necessarily have been a part of the final four other than the ridiculous ending to the Mississippi/Arkansas game. To refresh, Mississippi had already beaten Alabama and was on track to win the SEC West if they didn't lose another conference game. The only one they did lose was in bizarre fashion. They led Arkansas by a touchdown and Arkansas faced 4th and very long in overtime. The play was stopped until the tight end smartly tossed the ball 20 yards deep into the backfield after a catch short of the marker. Alex Collins scooped it up and somehow weaved 25 yards to barely manage the first down. Mississippi still would have won a few plays later if not for a senseless facemask penalty on another play that had already been destroyed. Given another reprieve, Arkansas scored and successfully went for 2 to pull out the miracle.
I knew that ending didn't do anything except to dramatically improve Alabama's chances. Sickening. Otherwise they are thrown into a grab bag with Stanford, Ohio State and possibly Mississippi (with a SEC title game win over Florida) for the fourth and final spot. Stanford and the SEC champ would likely have earned benefit of a doubt over a team that did not play for a conference title. Then the Tide got another massive break when Urban Meyer idiotically switches quarterbacks from Cardale Jones to J.T. "Little Game" Barrett, who found a way to pass for 46 yards and 2.9 YPA against an incompetent Michigan State pass defense.
If Alabama won the title again this season they should have had to go through Ohio State and Urban Meyer. Once Michigan State upset Ohio State the college football season was ruined, as far as I was concerned. You could see the path it took from more than a month away. Clemson is a hard trying team but they displayed vulnerability several times, notably a week after they faced us, giving up a ton of points to North Carolina State. Then again against North Carolina. That type of defense wasn't likely to withstand Alabama for four quarters.
Saban can rack up titles at rapid pace in this era largely because the rest of the nation has surrendered to cupcake finesse. Only a handful of teams are legitimate threat to his rugged teams. After all, it's too much work to actually fortify both sides of the ball and push big people around. Heck, we can run fast tempo and sideways and win 8 or 9 games. So much easier. The fans love it. Notice the type of coaches preferred by one fan base after another. The Big 12 used to be impressively physical. Now they've all but forfeited any threat of credibility in favor of a pinball sideshow.
As much as I despise Nick Saban's personality from his Dolphin years I do appreciate that he's largely rescued college football from the overwhelming ignorance that would accompany this era minus Alabama and its style of play. We'd be reading that the spread is unstoppable and that it's impossible to win anything of consequence with old man football.
