In the future...

Idk... it seems so obvious from the outside, perhaps that fearlessness comes from the way BJ "meets" with them. Hes probably really supportive and never talks about consequences until the BoT sends him in with the pink slip?
I’d think someone in an AD position would by default talk expectations... but I’d be wrong .

Using staff positions as a “friends and family” perk is a major problem.

Asking for self imposed accountability is basically saying, “I want a coach who values winning and imposes strict compliance with vetting staff talent. And also, nobody will hold him accountable to those standards. There won’t even be a ‘trust but verify’ approach.”

The problem here is the snowball. Nobody is vetting anything at any level. So the outside committee - that finds candidates, evaluates the market, and recommends the new coach - will be hired probably completely randomly. Its not like any of the prior four committees produced much by way of result; even in terms of value. Maybe the committees were decent and found good candidates but Miami just wanted to go cheap.

We agree that radio and golden suck hard; even more troubling is that they were way overpaid, and their defunct staffs were insanely overpaid.

After that initial contract, things become even more convoluted because there is no committee for renegotiations or replacing a coordinator. There’s not even a dream of an arbiter. It’s Blake James and Mark Richt’s agent doing direct business with someone else’s money.

This all amounts to saying “We need to get lucky!!” I agree, but some skill would be cool too.
I wonder if those outside committees maybe did come up w quality coaches on the list of candidates submitted? but the administration just went with the wrong ones.

Even if this were the case, those committees survey the market and were probably involved - and possibly coordinating - the initial contracts. Those were bad contracts. Al Golden and Randy Shannon made $2 mil+ and their staffs made additional millions. Since then, those dudes barely sniff $500k. Al Golden is an assistant tight ends or some **** lol. He probably makes like 100k right now.

Point is, with benefit of hindsight, UM has lost every negotiation almost two decades. That’s strongly indicative that they probably have a “friends and family” approach to finding a committee as well.

Great post and yes, we need to get lucky because ultimately all accountability will rest with the HC & his will to succeed. It will be 100% his guidelines, his accountability, his goals, his everything. Hopefully Saban rubbed off on Cristobal, or Manny just IS that guy.

You know, this is probably why they liked a guy like AG so much. He shows up with his binder and plan and they say great, hes his own HR department, thats exactly what we want. And Golden probably would have been much more successful if he had audited his defense.

We pay the guy 4 million dollars and our garbage AD allows him to hire his son with zero problem. Blake was desperate and gave Richt anything and everything in order for him to take the job.

I really dont think so. He may ask the HC "what are YOURE expectations?" and bring it back to the board. Of course the HC will just give these lofty goals, but the BoT wont say anything back until it is time to deliver the pink slip. See Mark D'Onofrio.

Desperate? I dont think so. I think BJ doesnt know anything about football, and thought that MR did. I think the expectation from the "AD" and the BoT is that the Miami HC will run the show, all of it until the BoT sends in the pink slip, or the coach goes to the NFL. The football programs success really doesnt matter to them, its just a licensing deal (Epi's theory) or a brand to manage. They manage that side, the football coach the football side.

He’s extremely competent middle management; whether that dynamic is “a good thing” depends on whether there is a single point of competence anywhere in the “risk taking” echelon.

The “BoT” is an elusive concept because we can’t really single them out, recognize them on the street, or assign them blame until there’s an Al Goldenesque situation. In fact, they are generally the saviors swooping in to fire the bad man and save the damsel.

So the AD is clearly middle management, and the BoT passes the buck. After that, accountability gets murky. Endowments and trusts are independently managed. Where do we look for fiduciary accountability there? Is there an accountant managing booster’s athletic funds somewhere that should have known better?

Totally agree Sam Jankovich knew football and Paul Dee was a good AD. This guy need to go.

Who decided Miami's policy of giving full power to the football HC? The AD or the BoT?

Good question probably both.
If thats the case, then theres no point in firing the AD, because he isnt accountable for the football product, only the HC. Thats why I say the next HC has to be a quality GM also, because the AD isnt a GM like he is at other programs.

I think its pretty clear that the countdown to MR's departure has started. I dont know when the hangman comes, but probably sometime after next season (4th), and before his 6th.

Its also clear to me that whoever replaces MR, is going to have to be HC & GM, so its my opinion that we should focus less on how good their W/L record is, and much more on who theyve hired AND fired for their staff and what theyve done to correct problems as theyve come. A good example is Diaz, who struggled at Texas but constantly adjusted to the game getting better and better.

You could be right but Richt will have all the tools he needs to right the ship next year. He will out talent most of the teams we play in the regular season excluding Florida and Florida State and he will have a schedule that features teams that either have a new coaching staff or are in full rebuild mode. I'm not saying Richt can get it done because it's the same scenario he had this year but I guess we will see. 2019 is the biggest year of his coaching life in Miami...anything less than 10+ wins and a coastal championship will be unacceptable and I think he will be shown the door soon after. A good season next year will probably result in a good recruiting class which is crucial.

Ive got a 5-7 floor and a 9-3 ceiling. It really depends on how up to the task Banda & Patke are. Remeber the D is the reason why we won 7 games, and we are losing a bunch of key players.

That’s the fiduciary/endowment rabbit hole.

Generally, somebody somewhere takes accountability for high-stakes decisions; even when it’s not required.

It appears everyone here is passing the buck and Mark Richt is “ignoring the noise” or whatever.

The board has a director(I hope) and id imagine that job probably cycles through the members; thus avoiding responsibility. The president I imagine was appointed/elected by the board. The president probably has a certain amount of autonomy/safety from the board. That doesn’t seem to really be an option though.

Also, I think even if he goes 6-6, theyll give him the start of a 5th season. Then as that season inevitably goes south, it will be week to week and we'll be looking at new HCs.

Its almost like they have it that way to avoid accountability? 🤔
