In the future...

Facts!!!!!! Blake James acts as if he works for the head coach and not the other way around. He didn't force Golden to change the defense, and now he won't make Richt change the offense. Blake James, you are the weakest link!!!!
It seems to me, that the arrangement is foe Richt to run the entire football department. BJ doesnt know anything about football and is trusting MR or AG to put something good on the field. He hired those guys with that expectation. If BJ has to fire MR, the next guy he hires will get the same deal, you gotta be HC & GM, at most programs the AD is a coGM at the least, that doesnt seem to be the arrangement at Miami. Next HC needs to have shown quality hires AND fires imo.

LMK what you think. 45 years old. Just got hired by Texas Tech from Utah State. Solid track record of success in hiring and promoting offensive assistants. Quite a solid, but not stellar, record, for Utah St. IMO, that guy could build a stellar staff if given the budget to do so here, runs spread concepts and is able to adapt to his personnel to play run heavy or pass heavy out of the same basic scheme. I have no doubt he'd be able to take advantage of south Florida personnel on offense and would be willing to bring in a Miami style DC to take advantage of what this area offers on that side of the ball.
What about crootin’?

We should hire someone who recognizes talented staff, adjusts and improves his own skills, relates to the players, calls plays fearlessly, and has a savagery game day demeanor.

Someone like Manny Diaz.

Oh yeah, this guy was my cousin's HC, lol. Yes, I need to see who he's hired at TT. Did he bring a bunch of loyal guys, or did he hire well for TT?

I dont want the next guy to have an "eye" for talent though. I want him to have that, and a process by which he evaluates resumes, hires quality people with some experience so that we are constantly having to prove that our coaches know what they are doing

To be perfectly honest, I think recruiting is overrated. Talent evaluation is more important. To win at Utah State, you have to be able to evaluate talent and develop that talent. Recruiting is largely done by the assistants, and Wells could add to his recruiting chops by hiring guys well known in this area. Win at Miami and the recruits will come.

To answer your question more directly, I don't know what his rep is as a recruiter, but I don't give a fugg. Cristobal is killing it recruiting, can't win games. Taggart was hired for his recruiting. No need to say more. Recruiting should be way way down the list of credentials that we evaluate when we are hiring our next coach.

Our coaches are definitely given total control, and I get it, but are they not also given expectations. Seems like Richt is operating with no fear of losing his job. Golden seemed equally uninterested in improving his team.

Haven't really followed that so far, with the debacle around here. Great question.

That said, relentless energy in recruiting is a must. None of this "we got our guy and are shutting it down at the position" BS. Hopefully, that goes without saying, but I felt the need to add that in anyway.

I think crooting does matter at Miami, but we do need to walk before we can run. We need the right systems in place 1st. Spread O & 4-3, then foe Christ's sake we need to fill up the depth chart. Im not saying we gotta get every 5* DB, but we should be getting four 4*s and two 3* DBs, redshirting the 3*s. A great class would have been...
4* CB Couch
4* CB Davis
4* S Smith
4* S Battle
3* S Nunn (redshirting)

Thats not the best class we could get, but its a very good haul.

I’ll actually agree with you here....If nothing else, our last two coaches have proven Xs and Os more important than jimmys and Joes. I’ll take the scheme savant over a pure recruiter every day of the week.

But I do think Recruiting and talent evaluation are important, if u wanna be a top 10 team anyway. We all know the stats... the best recruiting teams win ships.

But yea gimme the coach first recruiter second.

CD mentioned him awhile back last Oct I was surprised he hasn't been a hotter name as for hc jobs go.Appalachian hc who went to Louisville is another good up and coming coach.

Someone in the building would need to recognize greatness. The new coach would need to abide structure, so he/she couldn’t have much tenure. Mark Richt does not appear to work for Blake James; any coach of any established “eye” will not meet your criteria; otherwise they would need autonomy. It would need to be someone very early in their career.

This leaves us with coordinators or very fresh up and coming first timers. Someone already existing within the athletic department would need to be able to recognize greatness before it manifests. Last time we tried this we wound up with Alf. We also had a perfectly fitting suitor in Diaz, and he just walked.

Yeah, and it's plenty good enough to get us to the ACCCG 3 out of 4 years, usually with no more than 1 loss. We just need a coach that can take the talent we already have, put together a competent game plan, and not fvck things up. Do that for a few years, I guarantee the guy will be known as an outstanding recruiter by the time it's all said and done.

Just win, don't be a douche bag, stay in touch with and reach out to the local community, basically just continue to follow Dicht's blueprint in this regard (except for the lazy part about only bothering to keep in touch with your top 2 or 3 at a given position), and the recruiting will take care of itself.

.

I don’t know how true this is.

The next coach will take over a roster that finished middle of the pack in incoming talent. That ship just sailed.

I think @Dude point is that a coach WILL be given autonomy, because that’s how our AD functions. So, abiding by structure and a willingness to work with supervision isn’t necessarily needed.

Well, that's a good point. The longer we wait, the worse the roster will look, the bigger the hole will be for the next coach to dig out of, and the less attractive the job will get.

I guess what I am saying is, right now as of today, that's what we need. A year from now? Man, I don't know if there will be any hope no matter what we do. Two years from now? Just close the drawer and turn out the lights.

Idk... it seems so obvious from the outside, perhaps that fearlessness comes from the way BJ "meets" with them. Hes probably really supportive and never talks about consequences until the BoT sends him in with the pink slip?

Using staff positions as a “friends and family” perk is a major problem.

Asking for self imposed accountability is basically saying, “I want a coach who values winning and imposes strict compliance with vetting staff talent. And also, nobody will hold him accountable to those standards. There won’t even be a ‘trust but verify’ approach.”

The problem here is the snowball. Nobody is vetting anything at any level. So the outside committee - that finds candidates, evaluates the market, and recommends the new coach - will be hired probably completely randomly. Its not like any of the prior four committees produced much by way of result; even in terms of value. Maybe the committees were decent and found good candidates but Miami just wanted to go cheap.

We agree that radio and golden suck hard; even more troubling is that they were way overpaid, and their defunct staffs were insanely overpaid.

After that initial contract, things become even more convoluted because there is no committee for renegotiations or replacing a coordinator. There’s not even a dream of an arbiter. It’s Blake James and Mark Richt’s agent doing direct business with someone else’s money.

This all amounts to saying “We need to get lucky!!” I agree, but some skill would be cool too.
