In All Seriousness, A Tragic Waste

Fellow porsters,

I'm certainly first in line with sarcasm and quick wit, but I write this with great sadness.

Last evening at Empiricalette's University, a young man tragically wasted his life.

Young freshman in first semester out drinking way too much with his frat brothers (don't get me started)*. Somehow wandered back to his dorm and his "brothers" didn't check on him. He went to dorm's gym, again allegedly, in middle of night and tried to bench press.

The bar slipped from his hands and crushed his trachea. He was found by passers by (gym is a glass bowl type) already dead. Empiricalette was one of them. The authorities reviewed the video and began piecing the story together.

We have all done stupid things in life. I myself should be dead x10 over and them some. Wasteful moments like this remind me that someone's mother and father, someone's siblings, someone's grandparents have had their lives irrepairably broken and crushed.

I saw this too many times on active duty and I used to tell my young ones like a skipped broken record, "at what point do you think this will have a good outcome for you?"

Hearts are broken with unimaginable pain because of an idiotic lapse in judgment by what appears several folks.

Hug your family and remind them to make good choices.

Best,

Empy

I’m sorry your daughter saw that. What she saw and what happened to that kid is terrible.

Sometimes when we’re young it takes something like this to wake us up. When I went out as a young guy before I got on my department I definitely drank. Now that I’m 27 and seen some things I stop myself at 3-4 and I’m the one making sure everybody is good. 6-7 years ago though it wasn’t like that though.

@Empirical Cane ...I know all to well tragedies like this. I lost my Daughter at 18yrs old in 07 in a vehicular accident, then my former Wife (her Mom) from Cancer in 2013. It completely destroyed me. My heart goes out to you & everyone involved.
Goodness my regrets to you. No words can be said other than may you continue to heal thinking of the good moments and memories you made with them.

Sorry to hear brother, terrible thing for your daughter to have to witness. Hope she's ok.

Our Wing lost a very young Airman to an off-duty accident a few days ago. I didn't know him personally but some of my co-workers did. Stark reminder of how fragile life is.

Condolences to that young man and prayers to his loved ones and all involved, including your daughter.

I know myself should've died 10x over, just extremely thankful to still be here. I'm in my early 40's and buried 2 close friends this year. One from an apparent heart attack and one found unresponsive in a hotel room on a business trip of all things (STILL don't know what happened😔). And they were younger than me.

Anyway, life is short tell your loved ones you love them and pick up the phone sometimes. Sometimes we're so caught up in our lives not knowing just a little bit of your time/convo could save someone's life. I need to get better at that, actually.

RIP and blessing for him family. 🙏🏾
Absolutely tragic 😥, and yes, many of us on here could have died early many times.
Thanks for this heartfelt post and I hope your family members are coping 🙏🏾

As someone who has an incredibly fragile mental health and struggles repeatedly with really bad thoughts, long nights without sleep and a lot of tears, reading this hit very hard. Its such a sad, sad instance, because it was incredibly preventable on so many time stamps.

I'm always the guy in the friend group who isn't drinking as much, because I want to be able to walk home on my own and have a clear head.

If you have the feeling or the thought "Jeez, I haven't talked to X in a minute", talk to that person. Grab your phone and make a call. Doesn't hurt anyone and every person appreciates being called and asked whats up.

Watching out for your friends and family is incredibly important part to one's character.

I can relate, probably from a different cause…so sorry about your struggles. Know that regardless of comments and counter comments made here on CIS, you’re much appreciated family here. Wishing you a peaceful life.

My heartfelt condolences, bruh. So sorry your daughter had to experience this. Not to dismiss or belittle her experience, but it could be a life saver in disguise. Condolences to the young man’s loved ones as well.
