Fellow porsters,

I'm certainly first in line with sarcasm and quick wit, but I write this with great sadness.

Last evening at Empiricalette's University, a young man tragically wasted his life.

Young freshman in first semester out drinking way too much with his frat brothers (don't get me started)*. Somehow wandered back to his dorm and his "brothers" didn't check on him. He went to dorm's gym, again allegedly, in middle of night and tried to bench press.

The bar slipped from his hands and crushed his trachea. He was found by passers by (gym is a glass bowl type) already dead. Empiricalette was one of them. The authorities reviewed the video and began piecing the story together.

We have all done stupid things in life. I myself should be dead x10 over and them some. Wasteful moments like this remind me that someone's mother and father, someone's siblings, someone's grandparents have had their lives irrepairably broken and crushed.

I saw this too many times on active duty and I used to tell my young ones like a skipped broken record, "at what point do you think this will have a good outcome for you?"

Hearts are broken with unimaginable pain because of an idiotic lapse in judgment by what appears several folks.

Hug your family and remind them to make good choices.

Best,

Empy

I don't know what it is but most young folks aren't blessed with having the wisdom to understand you are NOT invincible. I too did so many stupid things and can 100% relate that I probably should not be here today. I have been lucky many times. But still, I had plenty of people when I was young tell me not to do this and that and be careful of this and that. Sometimes I listened but too often I didn't. Now that I am older, I get it. But HOW can we get through to the young ones? Sorry for the loss my brother. Tragic and parents worst nightmare. SMDH.

Sad story. Makes you appreciate the fragility of life & how life should not be taken for granted.

Hope your daughter is ok after witnessing such a shocking event.
Appreciate the thought..she's good (at least says so). Her mom and I have seen several lifetimes of death and I think we've prepared her best we could.

With that said, always a unique experience first dead body you make/see.

I thankfully survived that foolishness as a younger lion and came out the other side sharing your take.
I used to stress over and over...never leave your battle buddies. Go out, raise ****, have fun, go above and beyond to make sure everyone is ok.

I think that's a big reason why I'm taking this news far more personally than I should.

Struck a nerve I suppose.

Young people tend to think nothing will ever happen to them. It sad when they learn the hard way and sometimes the consequences are severe.

Please keep talking to Empiricalette. Sometimes it takes time to work through.
Keeping a very close eye since she landed. Experiences like this manifest themselves in lots of different ways.

Sorry to hear such horrible news. I can't even imagine what his parents are going through.

Thoughts with the Empy family as well. Take care of each other.
