In a weird twisted way, I get the Coastal thing. Ultimately, it is the path you need to be on to win the ACC, then be in the final four or whatever we call it.
However, it's the mindset that the Coastal title is the would be end game that we have in mind that is so screwed up.
I also get the fact that we need to win the Coastal to reach what should be our ultimate goal - playing for the national championship. But, the problem is that it's pretty clear that we've never viewed the Coastal championship as a necessary achievement (one that should be a small achievement, but amazingly, unbelievably, remarkably it has been something we haven't reached) our way to the national title. Before the season, you had AQM answering reporters questions by just responding "Coastal."
This season, the message from our coaching staff and players should have been "At Miami, the goal always is to win the national championship. However, we realize that to reach that goal, we will have to win the Coastal, so that is our immediate focus." Instead, the bar for our team was set at "We're focused on winning the Coastal," so now you're getting the remarks from Golden after Cincy of "We still have all of our goals in front of us," which isn't true if our goals included winning it all (which it should), and now after FSU it's "We haven't played any games in our division."
Personally, I don't much care if we win the ACC if that doesn't get us a spot in the playoff, so I certainly don't care if we win the Coastal, with that as our biggest "achievement." When we joined the ACC, I was talking **** to my Gator friends, when they were mediocre, when they talked about winning the SEC. I said that we don't care about anything other than national titles at Miami. Ten years later, our coach has set the goal in his 5th year of winning the worst division in the Power 5. This makes me sad.
