Important Reminder & Reality Check

For 3 years, we heard Mario was a complete mental midget, and couldn’t coach his way out of a wet paper bag. The only way we could be competitive is if we had a massive, massive talent advantage.

Then, that same guy rolled Notre Dame, UiF, FSU, Ohio State, Texas A&M, and Ole Miss, while winning two cold-weather road games that we’ve lost for 25 years, and came up 40 yards short against the first team to ever go 16-0 in the history of the sport.

So I guess he acquired some talent, eh? Maybe, as much as we want Matthews, we assume our staff is gonna put a talented roster on the field?

Either that, or I guess he’s just a good coach?

Pick a lane. But for god’s sake, sack the **** up. Jesus.
 
Seems we'd save some grief if we could come up with a consensus for when in the recruiting cycle it is socially acceptable to express nervousness or concern about the class. Maybe we pick an established holiday, for ease of reference?

Memorial Day, to remember recruiting battles lost. Or 4th of July, to celebrate our independence from the ranking systems. July 16 may as well be a holiday to any real Canes fan, it's JJ's birthday and he didn't need 5*s. Maybe Labor Day, as a reminder of all the work that lay ahead? Thanksgiving, to reflect and give thanks for whatever recruits we do actually have committed (however few they may be)?
 
Important reminder. Yesterdays recruiting isn't today's recruiting. 90% of the class will be committed before July. All these top recruits will be locked up by NIL. Yesterdays NIL isn't today's NIL. I was fine on missing on Upshaw and MJC (I really wanted him). Now missing on those 2 followed by Gamble and Matthews all in a row, I am not good and anyone saying different is lost in the old recruiting world. We are going to miss on Dollar, 5 in a row. We just came off the NC game and that provided us the biggest NIL budget we have had, yet. How are we getting pummeled 5 times in a row with our situation? I can get bothered missing on a certain player, but I never get to worked up. What is happening right now is a major concern. 5 misses in a row, 2 locals. Trying to put a positive spin on that is not possible. That's a honest, reality check. Cooney is definitely celebrating, lately.

The only part I disagree with is the "in a row" stuff. When these kids come off the board doesn't matter. This is like when people used to say who "won" and "lost" signing day. If I have the #5 class in the country, just as an example, and every single one is committed well before signing day, and none of them flip....and you get 3-4 commitments on signing day and finish with the #10 class, you didn't "win" signing day. I did. When they commit means nothing. It's all about the names on the paper when the ink dries.

And I say that because we currently are averaging 91.7 for our 8 recruits. Were that average to hold, it'd be the best average recruit ranking in Mario's tenure. We have two 5-star kids already committed. I wanted Matthews, desperately. I'm frankly shocked he's going to A&M. So this isn't cope...that's an L. No doubt about it. But we have some W's too. And we're going to get plenty more.

It's OK for multiple things to be true at once and live in the gray area. No, everything isn't sunshine and rainbows right now. A 5-star offensive tackle doesn't usually sprout up 30 miles from your campus. When he does, you have to get him. We didn't. That ain't great.

But we also have two 5-stars committed, it's April, and we know we have one of the best recruiters on earth and money to spend, at least comparable to the best programs in the country. We are going to get plenty more elite kids.

Right now, we have 8 commits with an average ranking of 91.7
Texas has 9 commits with an average ranking of 90.55

I guarantee you nobody in their fanbase is ****ting their pants. Why? Because they know, when the ink dries, they're going to have one of the best classes in the country. Maybe not #1, but well inside the Top 10, which allows you to compete for championships. I know the same about Mario. It's OK to curse when you lose a kid like Matthews, but also let's have some perspective here, long-term.

I definitely agree that commits are happening earlier than ever and are more solid than ever due to NIL.

You want guys committed before summer ends
