Like any career, lawyers have their stereotypes and it's been earned. However, it's funny how all that rhetoric goes out the window once someone has their as.s in a sling. A good lawyer is worth every penny. A great lawyer is worth even more.

My experiences with lawyers have been in business and with custody/support issues for my stepchild. Many years ago, we fired my wife's original lawyer and hired a UM grad who asked me what my goals were. I answered "to get you and all other attorneys off my payroll by creating an offer that the ex can't refuse." It worked.

Any everyone will happily blame the 18 year old for not understanding a multi-year contract.
My son is the son of 2 lawyers. He recently took a job with a company, didn’t read the contract because he was so happy to have a job, and did not consult either of his lawyer parents. Why? Human nature, and that is what entities like the NC2A and unscrupulous institutions pray on.

There have been numerous times in my entrepreneurial career where I a college educated and experienced individual read through a contract and felt comfortable with it only to have my attorney(s) come back pointing how some seemingly benign clause was a major red flag.

Same here. (Not to butt in, but to butt in...)

I had a non-compete with an ex-employer in Florida. When I had a new job offer in California, all my wanna-be lawyer "friends" said "Oh, those things aren't enforceable in California...." On a surface level, they were right. The part they all forgot was that doesn't prevent someone with a grudge from committing harassment via vexatious litigation. I didn't even know that term at the time, but I do now. I also have a couple lawyers to review things like contracts for me before I sign them. Lesson learned.

Oh and all those amateur lawyer friends....not one of them offered to help subsidize my legal expenses.

And even if you do - you can still miss important info buried in many pages of lawyer speak. I had a contract to lease a space - I had my dad (real estate for 50 years and very good at reading this type of contract read it) I had his two real estate attorneys read it. I read it and my wife read it (she is an attorney as well). We all read it numerous times and still missed some keep points around CAM due to all the other language and focus on the many other areas of concern. My point here is that even with many experienced and educated professionals, one can still miss important info buried in the contract (on purpose often) so imagine what will happen to teenagers.

Oh yeah, that **** is very very real. I find the rich business types, the real rich, it’s their go to. At the end of the day litigation is hardly ever about facts of the case, it’s just a war of attrition.
