The top overall performer during Saturday’s pool play was Elbert (Ga.) Elbert County athlete Mecole Hardman. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound prospect lined up as a receiver on the day, where he displayed elite explosion and speed. The field was loaded speed, but Hardman looked to have another gear not matched by anyone during pool play.
Hardman opened the day with a quick slant that he took across the field and beat the defense to the goal lone for a score. That burst was seen frequently Saturday, but the highlight of the day came on a jump ball in the end zone to Hardman. He out-jumped the defensive back for an impressive snag in the back corner of the end zone.
Offensive Top Performers
— Shea Patterson QB Shreveport (La.) Calvary Baptist Academy: The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Ole Miss commit spun the best ball of all the quarterbacks, and despite being a little off on his accuracy early, he rebounded with an impressive showing. Patterson took shots deep and connected. He also changed speeds on the ball well to complete the intermediate passes as well.
— Malik Henry QB: The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Florida State commit was another that showed a little rust early on in the day, but quickly turned it around for one of the sharper quarterback performances in a rather loaded quarterback group. Henry has an elite arm and was putting balls on his receivers numbers rather regularly.
— Cavin Ridley WR Deerfield Beach (Fla.): The 6-foot-1, 190-pound target used his strength and sure hands to catch several balls in traffic. Ridley appeared to be at his best near the goal line when he’s able to body up the defensive backs and create space for himself.
— Zerrick Cooper QB Jonesboro (Ga.): The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Clemson commit came out white hot, firing darts all over the field. He opened the day with a perfect dime for a touchdown on a go-route. Cooper cooled down some as the day went along, but he still showed off a big arm able to fit the ball into tiny windows.
— Jamal Pettigrew TE New Orleans (La.) St. Augustine: The massive 6-foot-6, 230-pound LSU commit showed impressive athleticism for a prospect of his size. Pettigrew was even able to stretch the field vertically and create matchup problems all across the field.
Defensive Top Performers
— Jayvaughn Myers CB Dade City (Fla.) Pasco: The 6-foot-1, 180-pound prospect had one of the hottest springs in the Southeast as his recruitment exploded with elite offers. Myers back those tenders up with impressive play on Saturday. He used his great length and speed to stay attached to receivers, coming up with several pass break ups.
— Chauncey Gardner DB Cocoa (Fla.): The most vocal prospect in the tournament backed up his mouth with is play. The 6-foot, 185-pound Florida commit was extremely physical with receivers at the line of scrimmage when playing nickelback. When he moved to free safety, where he was able to freelance a bit more, Garner really became active and getting his hands on several throws. Gardner is considered a versatile defensive back, which he displayed on Saturday.
— Ben Davis LB Gordo (Ala.): This is not the 6-foot-3, 240-pounder’s ideal setting, but the five-star prospect flashed good athleticism while playing both sides of the ball. One defensive Davis was able to come up with an interception as well a couple pass break-ups. While he was not a focal point of the offense, he did make a couple catches on the day.
— Shyheim Carter CB Kentwood (La.): The 6-foot, 190-pound Alabama commit worked mostly from nickelback on the day and was tough in coverage. He used his stout build to his advantage, and flashed good ball skills. Physically, Carter looks ready to compete on the college level right now.
— Marco Wilson 2017 CB Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage: The 5-foot-11, 165-pound prospect gave up some catches early, but bounced back with a couple pass breakups. Wilson’s highlight of the day came when he undercut an out-route for an interception and what would have been a pick-six.
Other Notes…
— The quarterbacks were the story of the day, with Patterson, Henry and Cooper all being considered some of the top offensive players during day one. Nipping at their heels was Boston College commit Anthony Brown out of Holmdel (N.J.) St. John Vianney Regional. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Brown did not have the supporting cast as the others, but he going shot for shot with his throws. Brown has a bit of a long delivery, but he still spun the ball well and was accurate with his throws.
Despite being only 5-foot-9, TCU quarterback commit D’Eriq King of Manvel (Texas) also had a strong day.
— Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy wide receiver Tavares Chase, a Clemson commit, made a very strong case to make the top offensive performers as well. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound prospect was able to stretch the field vertically, and was the top target of quarterback Henry on the day.
— Lawrenceville (Ga.) Archer wide receiver Kyle Davis was not targeted as much as other receivers, but the 6-foot-3, 210-pound prospect flashed impressive speed and fluidity that make him such a hot commodity on the recruiting trail. He has the physical attributes are match by very, very few wide receivers in this recruiting cycle.
— New Market (Ala.) Buckhorn 2017 linebacker Will Ignont has good size standing 6-foot-2, 235-pounds, but he was active in coverage on Saturday. He was able to get his hands on a few passes and was excellent covering the underneath routes.
