IMG Academy OL wins MVP award, talks recruiting

After showing up and looking as physically imposing as a lineman can look, then matching that with his dominating play, there was no doubt: 2019 IMG Academy OL Dontae Lucas was the clear OL MVP of the Rivals 3 Stripe Miami Camp after working at guard most of the day.

“It felt great,” Lucas said on winning OL MVP and earning a coveted invite to the Rivals 5-Star Challenge. “I went against some pretty good guys, Elijah (Roberts), (Khris) Bogle.”

As can be common in lineman 1-on-1’s, Lucas and Bogle actually got into a bit of a scuffle on one rep mid-way through camp. Coaches and players quickly broke it up and Lucas was laughing it off seconds later.

“Yeah I always get into it with Bogle,” Lucas said on the Cardinal Gibbons DE. “He’s a little too energetic sometimes, always yapping.”

With the 2018 class locked up and signed, recruiting for the rising senior class of 2019 has slowly begun to pick up. When asked about schools he’s hearing from, Lucas mentioned Miami first and said they’d be in it until the end, but stopped short of naming any leaders or top groups. Besides the Canes, he says FSU, South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, and Alabama are recruiting him the hardest.

“I have no top schools at this point, but you know Miami will always be considered, they’re the hometown team,” Lucas said. “I’m hearing from Telly Lockette at FSU a lot, South Carolina and (Will) Muschamp, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama… it feels like everybody at this point.”

Canes DB coach Ephraim Banda has taken the lead in recruiting Lucas to Miami and the IMG lineman is looking for a program where he feels comfortable with the staff, players, and overall environment. In the end, the school that will win the 6’4” 330 pound lineman over will have made him feel most at home.

“I want to go to a place where I can feel like I’m at home. Just a place where I can get a good degree.”

Wants to go to a place that feels like home? SMFH! Miami is home am I correct? Nothing feels more like home than......HOME!

I see what you did there, Lucas. There is no place like home.

What's with the negativity here? You guys know something I don't? That interview sounded like we have a really good shot.
He's transfered schools a few times.
and if you believe insiders here he will for sure be in the bag game. And as we saw this past recruiting cycle, we're keeping it pretty clean.

just wait, eventually he'll have Bama, Georgia, FSU, LSU, Clemson in his top schools list.

Anyone not committed before the end of summer is suspect. Word will get out on how much the waiting till signing day bonuses were. It’s been said by others and I’ll say it again. Elite trench recruiting requires everlast boxing heavy bags. Don’t care who your skill position players are. Our secondary despite improving in depth will suffer this year if our line is weaker than last year. If our record doesn’t improve or if we loose to fspoo our recruiting will take a step back and we will continue to lose elite talent from sofla.

I hear this every year.

Our record has improved for the two years Rick has been here, and we beat FSU for the first time in forever last year.

Our record in 2018 will most likely improve, I’m thinking 11 wins including an FSU win and you know what? For the “difficult” kids I don’t think it’s going to make one **** bit of difference. I’m not saying Lucas is one of those - I don’t know, but this myth about we just have to win more, I’m just not buying it any more.

There are just some kids where there are other factors. Look at UGA’s 2017 class, or this year’s FSU or UF classes. While UF and FSU took steps back in recruiting, they still did better than they should have based on their wins.

Call me skeptical but this seems like a bag style recruitment. Encouraging he says Miami will be in it until the end but wonder if that's more of a courtesy than a reality. Rollercoaster may be an understatement.

I can’t s say if Bags will drop or not but that’s not why he loves FSU. He is all FSU and telly Lockette is a huge (the) reason why.

Telly was good friends with Dontaes father who passed away and is a very close trustworthy mentor.

Him going to IMG as opposed to playing his SR year in Miami doesn’t help, but Pete has been calling this kid a lock for years

Pete was clueless on this one. Right now all FSU. He’s attending IMG to get his body right(like a redshirt year) so he can start right away in college

I think after a few visits on campus, Miami will lock him up!! Paradise Camp is when I think Lucas along with others will make it official, BUT of course the staff will have its hands full through out because this kid will be hot on everybody's wish list and they will come for him all the way til the end!!

NOPE

Listen signing day is almost 12 months away and i don’t think Miami will give up and when’s its all said and done I hope he’s a Cane. The kid wants to start right away, that’s why he went to IMG to get in the weight program. Dontae is a great kid and mom is a huge canes fan, that being said she will let him make the decision and her being a fan will make zero difference. She wants her some to be successful work on getting a degree and getting paid in the NFL. Right now the kid LOVES FSU; he loves the opportunity to play early and has a VERY close relationship with Telly Lockett. He disliked Clint Trickett at FSU and now that he’s gone, nothing is holding him back. He will be visiting FSU shortly and honestly I can see him committing. He has a good support system who wants what’s best for him so if he doesn’t commit he was talked out of it for a few reasons.
PLEASE don’t get your hopes up because more than likely we will have another PS2 Campbell situation. Pete was off on this one and the kid just gives what the reporters want to hear.

This will be a FSU, Miami, Florida, Bama and SEC battle.

The one thing “in my opinion” that could help Miami is that he’s never been away from home so maybe he will get homesick at IMG and that’s may change his view, but this is our only real hope.
