Absolutely. I used to love it when Seelig and Huerta would float the kicks down to the 1, but about 5 yards from the sideline. The KR has to think hard, because yeah, it COULD bounce out of bounds, but it could also bounce towards the middle of the field as a live ball recoverable by the kicking team.
Teams need to start reminding these KRs that they can call a fair catch, I still see some of them acting as if they need to return it if they catch it outside the end zone.

Even if people have played, the rules do change sometimes. I just don't understand being a huge football fan and NOT knowing the rules. Why don't they just watch cricket matches?

They do change. And I don’t even claim to be an expert on the rules, I usually find out about them during a game where I’ll go hey this used to be that, and now it’s this...
But about 99% of the basic rules, we should all know those.
Take for example the targeting rules, and the way they keep changing them, I’m not even sure I have those down yet.
But I’m sure Amari Carter will keep keep me abreast of them this year (as far as I’m concerned he can keep trying to decapitate people as long as he leads with a shoulder, but even then, I’m not sure if that’s legal anymore)..... (it is I guess as long as he doesn’t purposely aim for the head)

Ha! Did you notice that Amari Carter was very confident while they reviewed his hit in the Louisville game? I think you are right, he has become an expert in the rule!
As for the shoulder rule, that SHOULD only apply on "defenseless player". The Louisville player he hit was running downfield and was not defenseless, then it has to be "crown of the helmet".

And even if it will stay in bounds but close to the sideline, can’t a KR stand with 1 foot in and 1 foot out of bounds and it will count as a kick out of bounds?

Thanks. I'm really too old to care about what people say anymore. My concern right now is wondering when this **** pandemic will clear. My wife and I have had a river cruise from Paris to Normandy on our radar for a few years now and would love to see it happen while we're still alive. She could always take my ashes along in the event that I was gone. It would be cheaper since I wouldn't need a reservation or pay for plane fare AND
I wouldn't have to worry about being yelled at the whole time. On second thought maybe that's the best way to travel. Have a great evening!

That only works if you have a kicker who can reliably and consistently put a good hang time on a kick off. I’m not a kicking expert, never kicked in high school, just ******** around on the football field I’ve kicked off of tee, but it cannot be an easy thing to do.

As crazy as it sounds, Miami might be the ideal team for that. We have a fundamentally unsound defense so 3 and out isn't really likely, instead it thrives on negative plays. An opponent starting at the 45 instead of the 25 doesn't mean a great deal because the defense will probably give up yards and let them get to the 45 anyways. At least with an onside there is a chance to steal a couple possessions. On the flip side, since we have a high scoring offense, it isn't a backbreaker if the opponent scores on a short field after recovering an onside. Can't do that with an offense that struggles to break 30 like it did last year.
Its insane but Les Miles won a natty by being a riverboat gambler.

That’s actually been legitimately tried, and if I’m not mistaken, there was some coach somewhere that almost always went for it on fourth down.
I can’t remember if it was a lower division college, or high school , or a junior college.
Also, if I recall correctly, and I’m not sure if it was this guy, there was some guy that ran some kind of a statistical analysis that pointed to a greater success/win rate for consistently going for it on fourth down
Another vague recollection I have, didn’t Belichick go through a phase, like maybe 10 years ago, where he was going on it for fourth down quite a bit?

My supervisor coaches (I think peewee?) and he told me they figured out kickoffs were stupid since their kids coudlnt kick the ball very far and it always gave the opposing team good field position, so what they did was practice onside kicks a bunch, and basically did exactly that all season. Said that they recovered about 75% of the time, which outweighed the bad field position, but it made it even better since an actual kickoff wouldnt have been much farther anyways.

I remember seeing a story on ESPN about it. Might have been high school. The guy just went all in on analytics. If I remember, the team was pretty successful.
Triple option teams go for it on fourth and short a lot. It’s near impossible to keep one of those teams from getting one yard.

Also, if you put the ball directionally to one side of the field versus directly down the middle, it makes the field smaller in that the team kicking can eliminate some of the field by heading to the section you kicked to.
If they've got someone who is blazing fast, you will likely see directional kicking to a section of the field, but with a higher trajectory. The thought here is that it will allow your team to get there, forcing a fair catch, and typically these land somewhere around the 10 to 15 yard line. ***** it up and you're susceptible to the punt returner rounding the less loaded up side of the field.
Best case scenario, have a kicker who can get it out the back of the end zone and that's that.
