If We're Pulling Next Head Coach Names Out of a Hat...

With the caveat that I would prefer Butch, getting Pagano would be my "1A" choice. Much better than Mario, Chud, Schiano, or the like. Two things: would Irsay really let him go? And, would Pagano really not get other NFL offers that are more attractive/lucrative?

In a second. He could put together good staff down here. With all the Canes up there now, clearly his heart remembers us.

Who knows with Irsay? He's a complete wild card. Pagano absolutely would receive massive interest from any pro team with an opening (which is why I'm putting this in the "almost fantasy" column) so it'd have to be a situation where there are limited NFL openings and he didn't like any of them AND that he has some desire/preference to return to the college game. He did almost die so maybe he has different priorities (he also did jump back to college once before from the NFL). Even then it'd still border on complete fantasy because we'd surely lowball him and overvalue his Miami ties.

Looking more and more likely that Pagano isn't back in Indy next season.

Tad. I live in Indy. I have said what you are saying for the last 2 years. There is serious heat between Pagano and Irsey. Pagano would be a perfect fit for the U. It just might happen, if our administration is smart enough to make it happen. IMO there is no way Pagano returns as Indy's HC next year barring a super bowl victory.

Of all the "big" names that we like to circulate Pagano seems to check the most boxes. He has history with the school and the love of former Cane greats, the admin would not only find him acceptable but could tout his life story and he brings a big league resume to excite the fanbase. Obviously it's a longshot scenario based on money and interest he'd probably reveive by any NFL teams with an opening after this year but I think he'd be a great hire too.

Then, Pagano

They've coached together before.

I know and Butch could **** near fill the staff with them. With Kehoe and Beard on staff there's still Chud, Clappy would come back as OC , Dorsey, Possibly Pagano, Sollinger, Schiano, Rumph, Petri at a small school, Orgeron would take a DC gig and Radio (not likely) and probably others.
Or he can just groom the next group of future head coaches, either way it all comes back to Butch.

He was a great secondary coach here and great DC in his only game at job.
We have not had a better secondary coach since he left...maybe Mark Stoops.
IMO he would be a good choice if available.

I find Pagano coming to Miami (as the Canes coach) doubtful. The Colts were picked as a super bowl contender (even though their O-line is in shambles), and have started off dreadful. If the Colts miss the playoffs, in that division, I can't see Irsay not letting go of Pagano. The problem is, look at the jobs that would be open in the NFL, most likely:

Dolphins - Philbin should've been fired last season.
Eagles - That prolific offense of Kelly's looks bad given that he has no O-line.
Browns - I have nothing to go off of, just for the fact that I think the Bengals get into the playoffs, and the winner of the AFC north will be the only division to get in.
Jags - No explanation needed.
Panthers - That organization has failed to put a quality team around Cam Newton. Ron Rivera will likely be out.

There are probably another couple of teams that I'm missing. Hard to judge any further that we're in week 2. But one of these teams will likely give Pagano another shot. But I agree, I'd take Pagano as the Canes coach. ****, he'd be the best thing we've had since Butch.

I think we would make a serious run at him. The head butting with the GM's in the NFL (Grigson) has to be a turn off for Pagano..If we cna step up this might be a perfect fit..

He has to like dealing with 17 year old kids and going to their homes recruiting them. Dealing with kids and parents is not for everyone. But you never know. He may like recruiting!

I've been bangin this drum. Guy is probably a better game day coach than Butch, and he might even be able to convince Butch to come be his DC.
