If it’s Mario…

No chance.

Harbaugh was a god in Michigan folklore, a successful NFL quarterback and as a coach he won big at San Diego and Stanford, while reaching a Super Bowl with San Francisco.

He was their white whale and pie-in-the-sky, dream head coach for eons—and they finally landed him, expected him to win big and knew there was no Plan B if they didn't—so they rode it out and gave him time to get it right, as his name is literally synonymous with Wolverines football.

Mario Cristobal was an offensive lineman on two national champion caliber Miami teams way back in the day—he was never a superstar; just hard working guy in the trenches—and he's cut his teeth as an assistant under some solid coaches (Davis, Schiano, Saban) while getting his feet wet at FIU and doing some good things at Oregon.

He's a very logical hire for the Hurricanes as he has that same "Miami-bred", "understands the program" thing that Diaz was supposed to understand—as well as being a tireless recruiter—but in no way does his name carry the same weight within this program as the name Jim Harbaugh does at Michigan.

Weak comparison to try and prove some point.
Not saying he’s as good as harbaugh. I’m saying he’s being hired with similar intentions

We probably get the Mark Richt of Georgia 9-3 or 10-2 every year for 15 years out of Mario. I'm not convinced he wins a ring but with the conference down and looking like Clemson is getting weaker it should be an easy path. We'll be stable. Maybe there's an elite recruiting class that he cleans up one year and we make a run for it.

At this point its just about stability.
That’s all I think a rational fan can ask for right now. Give us 9-10 wins (9 in a season where we play a tough OOC Game like A&M + crossover Clemson and I wouldn’t fault him) and frequent trips to the ACC Championship. Build a strong foundation and culture, start locking down the top talent in the state. I think he can certainly do that.

I'd kill for 10+ wins and a NY6 bowl every win a la Harbaugh if we hire Mario.

At this point, this program needs stability and we'll recruit pretty well - just look at how well we recruited after Richt's 2017 and Diaz's 2020 season.

I hear you but, hes not walking into a skill position rebuild, it’s a trenches and defense issue, I have faith.
You better pray that he can bring in a great OC with him to properly utilize TVD and Garcia.

Mario’s offense has been mediocre for the most part as a HC. In today’s CFB landscape you need great QB play, and a high octane offense. Georgia has an all-time dominant defense this season, so they’re an outlier, but definitely not the norm.

Also, I doubt that Michigan will be able to sustain their success by running the ball without a good QB. They will get hammered if they make it to the playoff.

Dream head coach for eons? If that was true, they would have lined him up after Lloyd Carr left in 2007 instead of hiring Rich Rod. But it wasn’t. Michigan wasn’t ready to take a chance on Harbaugh straight out of San Diego. It was the combination of RR’s (& Brady Hokes) failures and Harbaugh’s successes at Stanford and SF that created the fascination. These obviously aren’t completely analogous situations, but the original point OP made is absolutely true regarding a long rope.

But at a place like Miami 9-10 wins for a few years can lead to a strong recruiting class. Doesn't work that way everywhere. You just can't **** it away in year 3 going 2-4 to start out. You won't recover

i agree with this. and just maybe one of those years we catch lighting in a bottle like LSU did and the talent takes you over the top (like 2001 and 2002* here).

i think any reasonable fan would accept this bargain.

They just brought in a 5* QB last cycle.

Everybody said they'd get hammered by Ohio and look. If Michigan ends up playing Cincy or Notre Dame Or Oklahoma St, they're beating them

The comparison is solid and therefore point is valid. Don't be an ***.

Exactly. If he can hit on a QB and fix our Defense, playoffs is very feasible. I’m intrigued about hiring Mario (in his prime)and will be patient for him to build a monster.
