I want Manny to...

Doesn't really matter what front you utilize if you use sound base rules.

I believe you should ALWAYS have a defender on the LOS setting the edge.
If the offense comes out with a TE and your DE is inside that TE, and you have nobody immediately setting the edge, you better check to something that will put a defender outside that TE. (usually can just walk the Sam LB down)

Not every DC does this. I see it all the time. A DC will call Quarters coverage, the offense will come out with a TE on the LOS, and they have NOBODY over the TE to set the edge. I asked a college DC about this and he told me that they have the Strong Safety set the edge. (from 10 yards away?!)

We line-up without an immediate edge player all the time.

Agree. We also give inside receivers a ton of cushion. I'm guessing we're baiting teams, because most team don't attack us there.

But on the safety setting the edge, I think its a necessity in today's game. DL or backer has C and the SS reads pass to run to get to D. The issue that catches us, IMO, is when we twist/stunt and get caught at the LOS. We're a high risk, high reward DL ... And when it works, its beautiful, and people think Diaz is a genius ... When it doesn't, people think Diaz is an idiot.

I just want the delayed safety blitzes to stop. If we are going to bring pressure from the secondary, have them attacking the line when the ball is snapped. (Ex: Loved blitzing Bandy from the nickel last year). Blitz with a purpose. We are just way too predictable. An offense with a pulse will expose that (haven't played one yet). In Manny's defense, poor ST play has to stop putting D in bad situations.

I am generally fine with Manny outside of some poorly-timed/designed blitzes but overall, hard to criticize him too much. That said, Manny - much more than to my liking - has too often made average QBs look great by giving them soft zone looks and allowing them to get into rhythm.

Francois is this type of QB - he's a rhythm QB that can get on a roll if we make it too easy for him.

Yeah, I just want Manny to cool it on the blitzing, especially on 3rd and long. Let the DL work to get pressure on its own, and let the secondary protect the first down marker. If you have playmakers on D, keeping it simple in that situation gets you off the field more often than not.

Yeah. Manny tends to be too much of a " riverboat gambler " at times. But at least it's so much better than the previous DC.:giggle:

Its 2018, teams are going to get yards. Bama gives up yards, Georgia gives up yards. It's obvious that some of you were just born to complain. It's never going to be perfect... As long as we keep them out of the endzone, which we've done a decent job of, I'm fine with whatever front we run.

Yes, we've played horrible teams since LSU (who didn't really gash us outside of 1 play) but if you don't see the progress that's been made since years past there's no helping you.

Run more defensive fronts. Some 3-4 looks, some Wide 9 looks, SOMETHING! I feel like we only use 2 defensive fronts most of the game. We did not do ANYTHING to stop UNC's outside runs which opened up their middle run game IMO. And no I'm not just talking about a pass rushing packages, I'm talking about some fronts to help stop the run especially to help set the edge since we're so bad at doing that from our basic 4-3 alignment.

It weird though because Manny ran some 3-4 front looks at Mississippi State but here he ONLY does a basic 4-3 alignment. Teams like Clemson or Michigan, some of the elite defenses that run the 4-3, has different looks and fronts. Manny runs the same front down after down making him so predictable in terms of what the offense is going to see. He does nothing to confuse the offensive line's blocking assignment on run plays.

I think Manny needs to also look at last year's Penn State and TCU on defense especially the way their LBers are coached. They run the SAME EXACT shoot gap 4-3 scheme and Penn State finished 17th in rush defense (119 per) and TCU finished 4th (99 per) last year. He need to look at how Penn State and TCU, who runs the same exact scheme, are able to keep the edge on their defenses.

3-4???

Seriously?? Why????

Been there, done that ....NO Thanks Coach D
