This just makes it even more confusing for me. 1 - if Woodward has such a great relationship with Lane’s agent, why wouldn’t you let him work it? It’s not like it’s a one-on-one negotiation. He has a BOT that reviews and approves any offer and counteroffer. That BOT also approved everything with hiring Brian Kelly. 2 - if Lane is their target, why would you make derogatory remarks about his agent? I don’t know, maybe I’m not seeing this right, but the whole thing seems really bizarre to me. Like the governor made a decision while heavily drunk Sunday morning and instead of sleeping on it they just went on an adderal and alcohol bender into the week.
And if Lane isn’t their target, then wtf are they even doing. I think the situation is Lane or bust
Check the tweet i just posted; the governor isn’t exactly a devil with the details. Also, additionally, he came out guns blazing without even proper recognition that the A&M buyout would’ve been half of what it was if it wasn’t for Woodward’s successor; not Woodward himself.
I think the governor is playing politics while also being ****ed off. The high buyout and the raising of ticket prices, announced way before the firing, go together as easy win issues for him.
It is a bit odd to have to a 3rd party have so much control over your program, i.e. repping the qb + HC, and it’s possibly Armstrong used that leverage improperly; not illegal though. I doubt the situation is Lane or bust; because if it is, he’s going to get a similar if not better contract than Brian Kelly lol. He has more leverage and more interest than Kelly had leaving ND {LSU targeted Riley + Fisher before Kelly}
You are on point about the governor shooting first and not worrying about who gets hit later. And that the AD couldn’t make a unilateral decision without many prominent people signing off on it. The governor just seems angry because he hasn’t accepted the reality that 5 agents rep 85-95% of the best candidates so he can’t kill 2 birds with 1 stone and get a top tier coach while also saving money on the buyout backend if things go poorly. I bet he was told some hard truths about the necessary price raises for tickets as well.
Where I’ll agree with the governor is that these buyout numbers are nuts lmao. I did some searching, and the 60th highest paid CFB HC makes around the same amount as the 20th highest paid NFL HC.
The top 10/15 NFL HC get paid more than their collegiate counterparts, but literally triple the opportunities in CFB. If, when, McDaniel gets fired — there is no 25 to 75 million buyout that the Dolphins have to worry about.
The raise/extension package deal, alongside skyscraper high expectations with short memories combination that has become so commonplace is the crux of the issues. The latter can be acceptable if the contract lengths mirror the NFL/NBA’s 4-5 year timespans; however, the increased competition with rotating roster dynamics (i.e. 3-5 years of eligibility) raises the head coaches’, who aren’t restricted by college eligibility or the mystery of teenage/young adult potential, bargaining power
