Miami has never opened up the checkbook. If they do now anything is possible. But outside of a very few coaches who is going to be guaranteed better than Butch Davis? But the OP makes a good point .There are good jobs available galore.

The problem I see is WHO is the home run hire? I actually think it IS Butch. From the countless retorts I have seen to my support of him, I guess there is disagreement with that. I kind of like Herman but he is hardly a home run -- more like cheap up and coming type I don't think we are ready for. Seems to be huge support of Chip. I am excited IF we are actually willing to spend 6 million on a coach and agree he will win ton of games and certainly Coastal his first year. But I do not see a NC with him and believe he will wear thin fast. He specializes in winning WITHOUT talent. Does he really know how to use talent? Those are not the same thing.

The one coach NOT named Butch Davis I think we should swing for it Mark Dantonio. Even with him I worry some if he can handle talent, but watching his defense, I think it will fit our talent base very well because it seems very aggressive.

There does seem to be something different this time around. Maybe those relentless banner campaign has more impact than just firing Al. Maybe Donna being gone mattered a lot. Or maybe, it is Frenk. I was disappointed with his hire because he seemed a Donna clone. But in all my decades as a Cane, I never saw a president come out and ever appear to defend the football team, ever! They usually lead the attack instead. Maybe Julio wants to rub his colleagues' noses in the dirt a little. Not sure who that favors in the search but the new leader usually gets a little edge.

In the end, I think it is Butch. You Chip dudes should have sprung for some $$$$ and flew a couple banners. Cheapskates.

I believe it's Butch Davis.

I believe this is who the likes of Blake James, Ted Chwartz, Paul DiMare and Stuart Miller want, but they need to be politically correct in the process and need to create a wide-open search.

All this talk of Davis being the fallback option; it just appeases everybody in the search process. Shoot for the Longshot guys and big names and if you don't land them, Davis now looks like a good third or fourth choice to all those folks who were against him. It's a win-win for anyone and makes it look like the search firm and committee wasn't lazy or didn't exhaust every option even if we all expected the same result..

In the end, there is too much competition out there for coaches this season and any big named guys out there are going to have a lot of options. Miami might be an attractive gig, but next to Southern Cal, LSU, Florida State (should Jimbo go to Baton Rouge), the Canes won't be the first-choice option for a lot of guys. They will outbid us for guys like chip because he gunna demand like 6 and were willing to pay 4. We have to fix a lot of issues, better our resources and most importantly WIN..

The dominoes are going to fall a certain way and when it's all said and done, I believe Davis will be Miami's best option.

If the committee chooses a Mario or Schiano over Butch ... they will fail Before they even start, it will be a tough ride up and those guys don't have what it takes, the powers know that, even if they won't admit it. Go canes!

Its 100% obvious that there are questions about Butch and his only chance is a fall back option.

They are not going to choose him over any big names.

We finally has some testosterone running the show and they are sick of picking risky coaches.

This search is a virtual **** measuring contest.

Butches only shot at this point is if these other openings take our big names.

I am super excited because that's one **** of a coach to have in the bag. We are either getting Butch or better.

My company just spent $150k on Korn Ferry to conduct a national search just to discover our COO was the best best person for the job. This way nobody can say they are a good old boy network. By the same token, if UM had just picked Butch the day after, people would be saying he had been whispering in ears to get Golden fired.

You don't even want to know how many expensive consultants I've seen over the years for an array of projects that just came in looked busy and made the exact same recommendations as the rest of the staff.

I'm not saying Butch is a given, I'm saying companies spend money for giggles regularly, so don't use that as disqualifying evidence.

i have personally used Korn Ferry. Butch may very well be the guy, but that decision is not made after interviewing a crapload of candidates and than narrowing the process to a few. Sometimes, you are correct, that it is a "dog and pony show" herein I believe it is not. There are candidates who are interested through their agent and maybe guys who are actually better coaches than Butch. That process is still ongoing, and none of us should be surprised if Butch is NOT the guy.

I cannot f***ing stand this defeatist mentality. We have the strongest recruiting base in the country, an above average roster with a quality soon-to-be junior QB, and we play in the weakest subdivision among the Power 5. Woe is us.

From what I recall, Chuck placed Randy out of respect since he was a well respected coordinator at the time. Jimmy Johnson also advocated for Patterson, but after Paul Dee intervened Shannon, Shalala stepped in and made the call. Patterson never got the interview.
