I’ve Never Seen Anything Like Toney

Ehhh, Santana Moss had the same impact just didnt put up the same numbers...

Yes, in fairness to Santana his first 2-3 years he was playing alongside very young and/or poor supporting cast. Some of his biggest plays were from poorly thrown passes because his QBs were not good or were getting pummeled. He would have killed it with this offense.
I also think thus far Santana has done more in special teams than Mali, but maybe Butch did better than Mario in that dept.

Barry Sanders, Randy Moss, and Deion Sanders belong at the top of the list. Marshall Faulk and Michael Vick are also in the conversation.
Dynamic in my mind 'does it all'... Barry could be up there with his KR/PR numbers, 1 rec TD
Faulk 5 rec TD's 0 on KR/PR
Randy Moss 0 TD's rushing, 0 on KR/PR
Mike Vick 36 TD's in 2 years
Deion never scored on offense in college that I could find, 3 PR TD's in 4y, 2 INT TD's though so add in Deion

I've been following UM football since late 1970s and I would concur with you.
However, and I say this with all due respect to our former great UM QBs, I would have loved to have seen some of these great WRs play with Cam Ward and/or Mensah at the helm.
Ooooohhhh Buddy. Cam Ward instead of Kenny Kelly would have made a huge difference. NOBODY would have hung with Santana deep and Reggie Wayne would just pick up first downs all game long.

The underrated aspect of Malachi Toney’s game that doesn’t get mentioned enough is his BALANCE. Look at the tackles he broke and eluded on that long TD vs Pitt. A guy his size shouldn’t be able to run through multiple defenders the way he does. Being able to maintain his balance while running full speed and changing direction is one of those things that elevates him over others. That’s a big reason why he’s able to rack up the YAC like he does.

Andre Johnson would have been lethal under Cam or Mensah. He would have been so scary SEC coaches would have sent Nick Saban to DC to play golf with POTUS and Turbeville to "return sanity to the game".

Funny cause it's true. Saw your post above mine before posting but obviously agree.

Blocking, too. He's Steve Smith but like when Smith was 26-29 and an All-Pro. Dude's 19? Crazy

For those saying 4.5 ish 40. He has gotten significantly faster this year. He will continue to get faster, stronger, more explosive. He just turned 19.

I wouldn't be surprised if he runs a 4.3 at the combine. This kid is different.

JSN ran 4.48 at his pro day. Mali will not, under any circumstances, run 4.3, but he doesn't remotely need to. He's plenty fast enough but he wins in every single other nuance of the game. He's got the best hands I've ever seen and his feel for the game is uncanny. The ability to get to the right area, the route running, the ability to throttle up and down when he needs to, he's an alien.

You are likely right. I'm just noting that this kid improves faster than anyone I've ever seen. I'm not ready to put a single limitation on him because he proves me wrong every time

Bet you Mali runs closer to that. The way this kid works I'm sure he works with a track coach. It is just in this kid's DNA to be the best in everything he does.

Santana's short burst was uncanny. Just like Devin he was perfect for punt returns.

Luck? Lol

EVALUATION.
…and DEVELOPMENT.

Some posters on here used to complain about all of the 3-Stars that would leave South Florida and become superstars for other teams, specially when they were playing us. While I always stuck to the same belief, which is that we were not evaluating and developing players correctly.

As I have always stated, the odds of almost every 5-Star and 4-Star that we landed pre-Mario being average to JAG level were astronomical. The more likely scenario was always certain to be evaluation and development.

Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s great to land highly rated, talented players. But many of those don’t pan out. They still have to be developed properly and in most cases coached up and put in the proper scheme which best suits their skills and talents.

Just look at our DB’s this season as exhibit A. Zac Etheridge was our defensive passing game coordinator, and got Thomas and Agent 0 to play lights out last season, and our cornerbacks looked much better. Even our backups.

While this season’s injuries to our DB room have certainly hurt big time, our DB’s in general have looked out of sorts and lost out there. Good coaching makes a difference and MATTERS.
